Re-chamber

A friend of mine has a barrels that was given to him that fits his rifle,Hall “M”) but the bolt will close on the no-go gage. I would think you could take one thread length off the shoulder and re-cut the bolt face area and hand cut the chamber to the right length. I was told the chamber would not come out right, out off round, or the taper would be wrong). I don’t see how this is true with a tapered chamber.

I'm sure that you will get a lot of help from all the knowledgeable people here but I would think there should be more info than what you give, like action type, thread pitch etc and how much is one thread. Just my .02 but all the headspoacing should be done from the chamber end and NOT the bolt's face. It's ok the square, the bolt face) up and take off a few .0001's but the main method is from the chamber. Depth mic the distance from the receiver face to the bolt face and then measure from the thread step to the gage, cartridge base) so as to see where you are first before listening to someone that may or may not be fluent with your problem. As far as an eccentric chamber goes, that's a hard thimg to screw up, but it can be done as can the taper which is governed by the reamer. You can also rechamber it without the barrel setback by the method of inserts which will restore any dimensions that you may need and the iron sights will still be on TDC. I would only take the advice from a competent source or you may have a bag of snakes later to deal with. You can do just about anything you want with metal as long as the professional knows the limitations.

I think the reference to "boltface area" was the breech end of the barrel. If the barrel is set back, then the breech will have to be relieved by the same amount, to maintain proper clearance between the actual boltface and the breech. I see no problem in setting the barrel back and re-chambering in this manner.
