Re-Barreling a Ruger American Rimfire

Anybody on here rebarreled a Ruger American Rimfire in .22? I have one, it shoots like shit (1.5" @40yards). Took it to the smith to see if he can put a Lilja on it, they don't make a drop in.

Is this a press fit? I'm looking for anyone's experiences or info to help him out.

I recently set one back. It had approximately 15000 rounds thru it and had a definite "smiley" at 6 o'clock in the throat They are pressed and also have a cross pin. I pressed it out using a shop-made pusher that fit through the action, made a "Stripper" piece with a hole bored in it a few thousandths over barrel diameter, and pushed it out in the lathe with the tail stock. I re-fit it to a tight slip fit and used Loctite 638 similar to a Border/Anschutz barrel. Also re-installed the cross pin, but it is really not necessary with 638 holding it together. Like most 22 barrels, extractor cuts are a pain. I made a drawing detailing the extractor cuts, but the file size is too large to post here. If your smith is not up to it, I can fit a barrel to it for you.

Once you get it out , I'd thread the receiver and barrel , cut the barrel with a coned breech and have it easy from then out if you like to experiment !
