Re barreling a Rock River ar-10 variant, question:

I would love to re barrel my rifle to a straight .243, a 20" .308 is a fairly lackluster setup. My question is: where can I find a barrel and extension for my rifle? Most importantly, what are the dimensional differences between manufactures (Armalite vs DPMS vs RRA) I should be looking for? Am I over thinking this?

Don't use an AR 10 barrel. Call Mark Hunt in North Carolina He puts a good kreiger or bartlein or what ever match barrel on moves the gas block up close to the muzzle and extends the gas tube. I shot my friends 243 done this way and it shoots as good as custom barreled bolt rifle. This guy knows ARs, come to think of it he has a bunch of bolt guns that shoot too.

Krieger can provide a barrel with extension, gas port, and gas block. I did not use their gas block on my AR-15, but the barrel was ready to go when I got it. Put it on, and shot it. They have the same barrel offerings for the AR-10. I intend to use them for my AR-10 build...if the wait is not forever.

I would have to call my friend in Tenn. but i've seen his number on the net. Ill post the next time I talk to my friend, it may be a few days. Mark Hunt was one of the teachers at the gunsmith school in N.C. He does gun smith work at his own shop now. He builds high power guns for Mid Tompkins, his wife and the daughter that shoots for the army team. I think Ive seen Butch Lambert refer him before he my see this and post contact info.

I usually stock AR10 extensions from Bat Machine for the few AR10 barrels that get requested. They are a nice piece. I just did a .243 for a customer in March. He also wanted something more exciting than the .308.

I dont know about lack luster but my ar-10 .308 is a fantastic rifle and shoots very accurately. I am talking less than a 1/2 minute of angle with all the quality bullets I have tried. I wouldnt mind a .260 but the cost is more than I can handle.

I know this topic is a bit old but I use and very highly recommend Black Hole Weaponry....You can google their site....3 groove polygonal rifling and stainless barrels with a couple finish options and several fluting options...run a 5.56 on my AR and love it...higher velocity and easier to clean....
