Question on re-barreling .

Question on re-barreling...... I have never had any one re-size or re-make a barrel . let's say I want to turn a cheap savage gun from a 22-250 barrel into a 223 , 243 , 6.5 Creedmoor or 308 caliber rifle. All I would do is have some ream barrel out for one of these calibers correct ? is this economical to do or is just better to use the action and have a whole new barrel made ? just wondering how this works. thanks. marty

Marty,

I'd recommend a pre-fit from Northland Shooter Supply, either a Shilen or a Criterion. Take off the old barrel, screw in the new barrel, set headspace with go/no go gages and you're done. I've done it several times on my Shilen DGV (small shank nut setup).

Remember, you are speaking 2 different size bolt noses. You will have feeding issues that will need to be addressed.

Ok. I just wondering how you professional guys do it. I will not be doing it myself but hire it done by a gunsmith if I was. sounds like no big saving boring out a barrel to change the caliber ?. marty

You do not bore out the old barrel , at least not anymore . You purchase a new barrel and appropriate bolt head and have a new Cali rifle . You reuse the stock , and the receiver . The receiver is what the gov calls the firearm , is the part with the ser # on it .

Gary, you might contact JES reboring. A rebore and chamber is cheaper and he does just a great quality job. He cut rifles them and I think in 3,4, and 5 groove.

Like Dennis says they will tell you what it takes. I don't know the new owner but Jim was great . Larry
