Re-barrel Ruger #1

A good question as I own three of them. I suspect it is because the scope mounts and/or quarter rib are on the barrel and it must be aligned, drilled, tapped etc after fitting the barrel to the action.

That and you have to pretty much disassemble the whole rifle to rebarrel it.

I do them, but I don't look forward to doing them:)

They truly are a PITA

There must also be an extractor cut made on the barrel of a Ruger # 1 that a bolt gun does not need. Many will have severe vertical string of the shots even at 100 yds if a forend modification is not done. This mod consists of drilling a hole and tap it for a set screw to be turned up against the barrel where the forend wood is attached. The one I have is welded in place and pressure is applied by the set screw in small amounts until the shots start to cluster into the same spot. This will make some number ones really shoot.

Here is a pic of the installation and set screw up against the barrel.

They are a pain! The extractor cut is the easy part...fitting the 1/4 rib to be aligned with the barrel and stress free while drilling and tapping those little shallow holes sorta sucks. The other post mentioned fixing the forearm hanger and that's a must but there are seveal ways to do it. The triggers should really be gone over. The guns are great but most barrels are not a match to the factory contour so it creates a little work. The 1/4 rib is the source of a lot of the cost.
