Re 5.56x45mm M855 Steel-Cored Ammo -- ATF Proposal

Forum Boss

Administrator
1. President Obama has not banned all .223 Rem/5.56 ammo by way of Executive Order. Rumors to that effect are completely false.

2. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives (ATF) has issued a proposed new regulation which would ban the sale and importation of m855 and SS109 ammunition that has a steel penetrator in the core of the bullet. Though this ammo is commonly used for "sporting purposes" the ATF apparently seeks to ban it on the ground that it is "armor-piercing".

3. At this time, ATF is soliciting comments on the proposed regulation, which would ban certain types of 5.56x45mm ammunition, including surplus ammo and ammo produced overseas.

ATF will accept comments on this proposal until March 16, 2015. You can email or write the ATF that you oppose this proposed ban on certain types of 5.56x45mm ammunition. REQUEST: Please do not start yet another thread on this subject. Every related thread started previously by anxious Forum members has contained inaccurate and false information. Then when the thread gets removed, people get all upset. If you want to actually DO something about the proposed ban, use the provided links and write to the ATF and your Congress-persons. OK?

Here is information from the NRA ILA website. This explains how to contact the ATF and your member of congress. SEE NRA ILA PAGE here: http://bit.ly/1DMzgJ8

ATTN: AP Ammo Comments

Dear Sir or Madam:

I oppose an ATF ban on 5.56 M855 ball ammunitions.

It has come to my attention that the ATF is seeking public input on a proposed ban on 5.56 M855 ball ammunitions. I am contacting you today, to tell you I solidly oppose this ban.

Law-abiding American citizens have been using 5.56 ball ammunition for sporting purposes for decades, so this legislation appears to be a case of the government arriving at a solution for a problem that doesn’t exist.

Through this proposed ban, ATF disproportionately focuses on how criminals might use sporting ammunition in a handgun. Classifying criminals as a “consumer group” in the ATF’s white paper on this topic is also disturbing, as it further implies that the industry purposely sells firearms and ammunition to this element.

I urge the ATF to permanently drop the proposed ban of 5.56 M855 ball ammunition.

Sincerely,

Your Name, Title

This is the best thread on this subject yet. Good info and links that will be used........ Thanks to the forum boss! Hopefully it won't get derailed....

See the article at the attached links.....now ATF is claiming it was a publishing error....and there is no planned ban.

This is good news but it seems so odd they would publish this and then retract it once everyone starts complaining to them about another useless, baseless law.

Nothing odd about it at all. Same can be said for the usafe act. If ny could have caused them so much inconvenience as to stop gov from working it would be taken off the books just as fast.

I don't think there is any nefarious conspiracy here - I imagine it went something like this:

1. published it with the error
2. people went apesh!t over the "conspiracy" to ban ammo
3. ATF got tired of fielding incessant calls and general clamor
4. They publish a correction, noting the mistake

It's possible they might have "accidentally" published the error in the first place to see what the response would be; either way, the end result was that the negative response was clearly overwhelming. Sometimes, a duck is a just a duck.

If this was an error, somebody at ATF better call the White House because their spokesman thinks the ban is going forward. He is saying this is a good move because of the ammo being common to handguns now.Hey,it doesn`t matter to me how the ban is stopped,as long as it is.By the way I received responses back from my Rep.(D) and one Senator (D) saying they were looking into it.I live in Delaware. It`s a good way to start the week.

I don't know where all this so called info is coming from. But at 3:30 today I went to CNN news.It was said that the ATF was proposing to ban this ammo. And that pro-gun supporters were fighting it and blaming our president on trying to sneak it through.I am not a reporter and don't want to be this is only what I read at the bottom of the screen!!!

Two different things are going on here:

1. ATF is currently proposing to ban m855 ammo, by removing its exemption to the restrictions on armor-piercing ammo.

COMPLETELY DIFFERENT >>>>>

2. M855, by mistake, did NOT appear on an official list of ammo types that are currently EXEMPT from rules banning armor-piercing ammo. The ATF said that M855 should have appeared on the "currently exempt" ammo list. The omission was a mistake.

OK, got that?

All right, we still have a situation where the ATF is soliciting, until 3/16/2015, comments on a proposal to ban M855. You can still comment on that proposed ban using the links posted above.

Bottom line: M855 is NOT banned right now, but it MIGHT be banned in the future.
