RE-16

Hey Fella's,
I was checking to see if anyone has used RE-16 with the 22-250 Remington. I have found some recipes with BL-C(2) and CFE223 and looking at burn rate chart RE-16 is in the middle of these two.

(138) BL-C(2)
(139) RE-16
(140) CFE223

I will be loading Hornady 55 gr Spire points being these are the only ones I can find during these troublesome times finding ammo, powder and bullets. Look forward to hearing from you guys with more experience than myself.
thanks

Good morning magicman,
It is good that you are asking for load advice rather than blindly following a burn rate chart, especially one that would lead you to believe Reloder(R) 16 burn rate is between those two powders. That is definitely erroneous, and Reloder 16 is a good bit slower burning.
We found decent results with Reloder 16 in 22-250 Rem with a 70gr Speer bullet when we tested for #15 Speer, but didn't even test it for 55gr, as it is too slow burning, in my opinion.
The attached links are for Speer data, other sources may have 55gr loads, but again, I think it is too slow to perform well with that light a bullet.
Be safe and shoot well,
Paul

I could see RL15 in the middle of those but definitely not RL16. RL16 is a great alternative to H4350; actually IMO it is way better than H4350 and is my "go-to" for the Creedmoor family of cartridges.
RL15 should work well for the 55 grain bullets, as does Varget.
Forgive me @Alliant Reloading my friend but my 20+ years behind 22-250 tell me you can't do much better than H380 with 50-55 grain bullets.

Thanks so much fella's!!! I will shy away from the RE-16 for the 22-250. I have RE-15, Varget, 8208, H4895 and others that I will be able to find a load with. Thanks again for the information.

Varget worked good for me in 22-250 55g bullets.
Reloader 16 kicks but with 140g bullets in the 6.5 Creedmoor.
Higher velocities than H4350, great accuracy.

Looking at Sierra’s app for a 55 gr Blitz King which looks like a tipped spire point, they list 7 powders at 3720 fps (not compressed loads). RE15, Varget, CFE223, H380, Power Pro 2000 MR, Big Game, and RE-17. If you back it down to 3600 fps, they list 15 different powders.

This is my load for my rifles and I take no responsibility if it doesn't work out for anyone else. I've shot 22-250 for over 20 years now; lots of them down the spout. 41 grains H380 with Federal primer in WW brass and a 50 grain Nosler BT has always given me right at 3,980 FPS from 24" barrels. It is flat shooting, gets to the target in a hurry and makes red mist with lots of flight time. The last few years I have been blessed with a good supply of Hornady factory 50 grain VMax ammo and it has not changed my high opinion of the 50 grain bullet in 22-250. I feel it's the absolute best for varmint shooting out to as far as 600 yards (can do more in the right conditions).
