RCBS

I meant no criticism - my only intent was to offer you a straighter path to solve this problem. An experience reloader should be able to identify the cause and save you a lot of time, grief and maybe expense.

As I said, this could be defective equipment and nothing you did incorrectly. Communication on the net is a challenge for sure. Even talking to someone via phone would be better but that is becoming extinct like the dinosaurs and me. In today's brave new world, text rules the world.

Best wishes.
Thanks. Felt no criticism. Just trying to noodle this out. And when you're hungry for the correct information, sometims it takes a lot of noodles!

Have a question about how to overcome the limitations of the dies RCBS puts out. I bought .223 and 6.5 Grendel small based die sets. On the .223 the depriming and sizing die bends the casing and ruins it four times out of ten. I wrote them and they said they would take it back for thirty bucks and fix it. Fix a new set! Now I am having to use my old Hornady loading die, because it does not do this. You would think on .223 since 55 gr spire points are hugely predominant, they would just know the size to make it. Then, on the Grendel die set, the sizing die does NOT go down enough, even though I am maxing it out, and makes the case twenty thousands too long at the shoulder. I know this to be true because I measured the case against a Hornady black new case, and it was visibly longer, as well as measured with a caliper. I even had to drill out the port on my Odin Works new 6.5 Grendel barrel, because they made it so small, it would not reload on my AR. What is with companies these days? I should not have to do anything to new products paid for, in order to 'fix' them, right? I am perplexed.
I was typing up a long response then changed my mind. After rereading your post several times.

The main thing I pick up on is you said the cases are only ruined 4 out of 10 times. It's the same die that doesn't ruin 6 out of 10 cases. Sounds very weird. Interested in other peoples comments.

Later:
When you size a case with a small base die and make the body smaller in diameter it must push the shoulder forward. When the body diameter is reduced the brass must move somewhere. A bump gauge will tell you if sizing is moving the shoulder forward. If a case is not damaged when sizing can you still chamber an empty case? Why did you buy small base dies? If it's a bad die it would damage all cases? The cases must not be the same dimensions before sizing.

That could be because of case length. If the cases are not trimmed to the same length, the die will try to crimp the long ones, or buckle the case.

New cases can be 10 thou shorter than your chamber. You must fire the new case to get a close idea of your chamber size. New brass is always shorter than spec so it will chamber. When you say you have the die all the way down, are you raising the case all the way and then turning the case down til it stops? If so, when you size a case there will be a small gap between the shell holder and the bottom of the die, this is due to having to take all the slack out of the linkage. You must turn the die down another 1/4 to 1/2 turn to remove the gap.

Sounds like a seating die issue to me. Sounds like the die is screwed down too far seating the bullet and collapsing the case seating the bullet. But I admit TLDR 2 pages.......

And the reason you wanted to replace the Hornady die with a small base die? As far as the RCBS $30 charge - I believe it was a result of their not being able to understand the problem you are having. The problems you are having is why I don't have any semi rifles or have any desire for range pick-up brass.

I realize people aren’t glued to the site.
However he had the time to write an incomprehensible post, run RCBS into the ground, and have many knowledgeable site members try to decode his problem and help him.
Me? I’d at least appreciate the time spent and acknowledge the efforts that were made.
The only thing I’m curious about is the claim RCBS wanted $ 30.00 from him. I don’t believe it.

Are you using an RCBS shell holder on the grendel? I don’t think all shell holders are identical so can affect how much it bumps the shoulder
