RCBS Universal primer tool revisited

rap36case

Working up loads for new Shilen 308win
I have tried to find the same problem I experienced in the reload forum. My RCBS universal primer is sick. I changed over to small primers (BR4) to try some Lapua Palma brass in my Shilen 308. I changed the gate, the extension, etc.

Now when I feed primers from the tray, 3 go down the hole at once. I tried email to RCBS and get a 'error' message in return.

I don't know what I may be doing wrong. It did not do this with the large primers.

If 3 primers are dropping down the hole, then the primer seating plug is not positioned properly. When changing the plastic primer feed, if the handle is relaxed too far and spring pressure is lost, the internal linkage can slip out of alignment.

Things to double check:
White plastic primer feed installed with small hole oriented up.
Check that the cylindrical end (lower end) of the pivot link assembly is seated in the handle's circular recess. Check that the ball end (upper end) of the pivot link assembly is aligned properly with the lower end of the primer rod.

When squeezing the handle, does it operate smoothly without any binding?

Hope this helps.

I have two RCBS auto hand primers; the best I can do is stack two primers, there is not enough room for three primers and not enough leverage to seat the top one. I have found the stacke4d primers are caused my the reloader double clutching the handle; the first primer starts to seat and stays and when the reloader pumps the handle another primer slides in beneath it.

The old Lee hand primers has the same problem. Removing the case from the shell holder with a protruding primers presents a problem for most reloaders.
