RCBS trimmer and 3 way cutter

Can anybody tell me what I'm doing wrong. I couldn't ever get the cutter to outside debur the case mouth 100%. It seemed that the case was wobbling or off center because it would leave 1/4 missed on each case or it would

Only thing I can think of, off top of my head, is that you may not have the right size collet or the case isn't squarely mounted in the collet.

I've got the newer model that doesn't use collets. If I place the brass all the way down in the holder, it's too low for the cutter. I didn't see a way to adjust the holder.

Insert the case and keep the handle held down while inserting the pilot. Let go of the handle after the pilot is in. Doing that makes sure it's centered and has worked nicely for me.

I tried for 3 hours last night and never could get it to cut straight. Packed it up to send back. Thing I'll try the Forster with 3 way cutter. I hate brass prep!!

Are you sure you have the right shell plate, because something is definitely wrong.I don't have the trim pro but rcbs would be the one to call on this before you give up. One thing you should know is every machine that does all in one like what you bought needs technique in order for it to work right. Were the cases sized first or out of the bag or whatever. If you go with a Giraud of Gracey it can be just as big a pain to get it to work properly.Research before you give up.We can help you if you can tell us what your whole process is before trimming etc.

There is no quick recipe to get case prep done in one motion. It takes technique and practice.I will give an example: My future son in law bought a complete hornady reloading kit over 2 years ago. He comes out here to reload and forgets almost everything I taught him due to not being consistently involved in this part of the sport. It takes repetition and constant vigilance to keep up to date. You have to practice until it makes you fully understand how things work. I have a couple gracey power trimmers, and I still struggle with setup.Nothing is easy and simple and it just takes time to execute the job at hand.We are here to help anyone with problems, but if you just give up buy factory ammo and enjoy shooting.Ask and ye shall receive.

Brass was new lapua brass that had been expanded and neck turned. I also tried fully prepped 300 win mag and 30-06 brass. The RCBS 2 does not use a shell holder, you press a handle down and insert the head of the case into a set of jaws that is good for all calibers. I held the handle down and inserted the cutting head into the case mouth so that it would set straight with the base and not wable. Even though the case mouth was getting cut to the right length every time, it still would chamfer and debur crooked. You can easily see that the inside chamfer and outside debur were crooked by turning the case. I spent 3 hours adjusting the debur and chamfer settings on the trimmer to try and get them to cut evenly with no avail. It did the same thing for all calibers. I did a search online and it seems like a common occurence with the rcbs 3 way cutter and the trim pro II trimmer.

On mine the pilot has a cutter that does the inside then the regular cutter does the flat and the one with the thumb screw cuts the out side. If the pilot fits the case neck tight it has to cut right. The pilot guides the case along with cuts the inside chamfer sets tight forward of the 90 degree cutter.
That was why I said size the case to fit the pilot. Larry

He had already sized and neck turned.Maybe a giraud is in your future or just use a wilson and deburr using a prep center or drill mounted deburring tools.I use a vld in an adaptor in a drill and it is super easy, then I do the outside and then 4ooo steel wool to smooth the chamfers.

One of these centuries I am going to break down and buy a Giraud! The time and tedious aggravation it will save will more than make up for the expense! Now if I can just get myself to go ahead and do it!!

Ben, how can you not buy one? They are made in your back yard, Richmond, Republic of Texas. ;)

Oh I know Steve... I am just one of those hard-headed guys that have been doing things one way for so long that, it becomes part of my way of thinking. I really am considering getting one with income-tax return.. I need that and a BenchSource>>>those would make my day!

I would hate to think of doing 2500 223 brass with out my 3 way cutter. I even do my dasher
with 3 way cutter I have had special made. I feel the problem he is having was caused by not having the proper size pilot. Larry

Possibly a defective unit. Once adjusted, mine cuts like butter. 308 and 223. Old RCBS trimmer with the collets.
