Rcbs neck ream die reamer

Hello, ive been reforming 270 brass to make 257 roberts for my 257 ack. I have a rcbs neck ream die, but no reamer. My first question is what size reamer do i need? .257? Or is it the id of the reamer hole in top of die? Second question is does anyone know of a supplier who makes or sells this reamer? Clymer said they would need a drawing. Huntington did not respond. Thanks for info.

Does the rifle have a tight neck chamber?

Maxinum OD of a loaded round should not be larger then .290" for a factoty chamber. Yours may be very different?

Outside neck turning may be a better choice? Depends on how much brass needs to be removed.

Reaming is good to remove a donut. Leave enough to outside neck turn.

With out measurements from the rcbs neck ream die , its all a guess.

I called rcbs. A complete waste of time. They stopped making theses 2 yeats ago. Had no specs for me to get made from. Im forming my own brass from 270 as 257 roberts brass is like hens teeth. My understanding is that when doing this you end up with thicker necks. This die came w a set of dies that came with the rifle. Im going to get some better measurements, but i think i measured a case at .250 inside. Ill get some solid measurements.

Straight fluted chucking reamers are available from supply houses (Grainger, MSC, Travers etc). US made, high speed steel, flutes abt 1 1/2" in length, under $30 shipped. I just spied a .251" - they come in all sizes.
Maybe ream w that one, then taper expand, then neck turn? Just spitballing.

Measure the hole in the top of the die. Then buy a reamer from MSC .001 smaller. I have two of these dies, One for 243 win & one for 25-06. Make brass from military brass.

Ive got a bunch of 270 brass, and i dont have a 270. 7x57 is kinda hard to find too. Thats probably the best route. I norma 7x57.

Yes nosler is about only option. WW just ran a run of it, its on gunbroker for 1.00 a piece. None of the bigger outfits got any of it i guess(grafs,powder valley,brownells,midway)

I think you can buy brass cheaper than you can buy the tools to form them. My 257 is R-P and my 7x57 is Norma. How many rounds do you need. It must be a hunting rifle and 20 rounds should last a life time unless you live at the range.

I have two RCBS neck ream dies with reamers, for 22-250 and 243 Win. The 22-250 has a diameter of .223", the 243 has a diameter of .242". It looks like they took a piece of drill rod, ground a square on the driving (tap wrench) end, and six flutes on the cutting end, tapering the last 1/2" inch of the reamer several degrees. The cutting edge is the same diameter as the shaft, and it must be in order to guide the reamer in straight.

I have a 25 Souper ream die that did not have a reamer, I bought a piece .256" drill rod in the hope that I would have access to the proper equipment to make one, or talk someone else into making it for me (this hole was measured with a pin gauge). Chucking reamers will not work.

Chucking reamers are out? Hmm, not doubting your word. I need to see an rcbs set up to answer a few questions that have now popped up. Ponder, cogitate and hmm.

The shaft above the cutter is needed to align the reamer as you drive it with the tap wrench.

Post 13 describes my old Lee Target loader reamer.

Case held in neck die, while reaming.
After reaming there was not enough neck wall thickness left to allow outside neck turning and still hold the bullet, using Lee's die. Neck tension was about .0015" and ready to load.

Best to just buy new brass. The custom reamer will not be cheap.

Its actually a 257 ai. Wanting to use as a varmint rifle. Found some winchester 7x57 brass. My die measures .256 with a digital caliper. ( i know thats not that accurate). 270 brass reformed measures 253. I wondered if chucking reamer would work. Ill just shoot the 7x57. Thanks for all the info guys appreciate it

Chucking reamers will work, l have a 22-250 RCBS neck reaming die that l bought in the 70s along with 2 chucking reamers .2235 and one .2240 reamer, reamer flutes are 1.750 in lenght, the flutes align in the reamer in the die, dies are hardened reamer won't do anything to the die, still using that same setup today with the first reamer only cuts at the tip of the reamer.
l don't think RCBS makes them anymore look in ebay, I'm looking for rem. 223 inside neck reaming die now l have the chucking reamers.
