RCBS Gold Medal Screw Up...

Bully

Silver $$ Contributor
I have a set of the RCBS Gold Medal Match dies in 6.5x47Lapua.

Unfortunately I bent the decapping rod and when I tried to straighten it, it snapped. I ordered the 6.5 decapping rod from Amazon however it doesn't fit the Gold Medal dies (I was hoping against hope).

RCBS is shut down because of the issue with the dam in California and can't be reached, at least as of last week. I checked Midway and Brownells and neither seems to have parts for the Gold Medal dies. Does anyone have a suggestion on how to find the part I need?

Thanks in advance.

The most expedient solution to your problem is a Lee Universal Decapping die or similar. I deprime as a separate step anyway - I take the decapping pins out of all of my sizing dies.

I have no idea why I didn't think of tha but I'm glad you did. Thank you.

You bent the rod and fractured it at the same time, and then? you straightened it, that finished it. That is the way it has been from the beginning, next time try heat.

Make sure the Lee pin is compatible with your flash hole. I had to turn mine down a bit. Easy in a drill if you don't have a lathe.

Just passing it on. RCBS is still operating . I was on the phone with them 2 hours ago

Bought a lee before I ever bent/broke one! Best $ I ever spent!
I'm with you on this! Mine has decapped thousands and thousands of cases, many of them mil surp with crimped primers, has never skipped a beat and it is still going strong. Best ten bucks I ever spent!

10-4 on this. I made mine fit the Lapua brass perfectly, and It's been good to go on everything else. jd

A tip on the Lee decapping die; there are aftermarket pins available that are much more stout than the factory ones are. I ordered them through Amazon, where they're listed as 'Hardened Steel Decapping Pin Upgrade for Lee 90783 / 90292'. Quite a nice improvement IMO.

The rod/pin on my Lee Decapper is a one piece deal; no removable pin. I assume that it relies on a larger diameter, and the collet that would allow it to slip rather than bend on a Berdan case or other problem. jd

It seems I hardly ever break a decaping pin in a sizing die but I break them alot in decaping dies. I have the Lee same as yours and I've broken the Rodpin assembly quite a few times. Should be simple but not sure what I'm doing wrong. One thing I've done is use sizing dies larger that the case I'm decaping to decap with.
