RCBS Chargemaster not accurate...

I bought this thing because of all the good reviews but mine doesn't throw accurate charges. About 60% of my rifle loads,Varget, IMR4064) are at least 0.2 grains over sometimes up to 2 grains over. My manual powder measure actually does better... and funny enough it's a RCBS!

It seems as if there is a big clump at the end of the rotating tube so the trickling action at the end sometimes drops more than desired. Is there a way to reprogram it for more accuracy?

I cannot address your exact problem as my Chargemaster usually throws charges that vary under .1 gr.. I would call RCBS customer service as they have usually been very helpful to me in the past on other problems or questions. I copied their toll free number in case you needed it :customer service toll free at 1-800-533-5000,Monday - Thursday from 6:30am - 3:00pm Pacific Time). Give 'em a shot at it and see what they say.

Within the last week or so, there was a pretty detailed upate on reprograming the ChargeMaster on the Daily Bulletin. You can also get a McDonald's straw,larger in dia than most) and cut off about 1/2 inch. Place in into the tickle tube all the way to where it is even with the front of the trickle tube,where the powder comes out). This will stop,hopefully) some of the over throws of powder,especially large kernels like 4064).

Take a look at the article as I think it will help -- at least show you where to get help.

The straw helps quite a bit with overthrows, so much so you wonder whey the go though the trouble to thread the end of the through tube when we go through the trouble of using the straw to make it smooth.

thanks for that guys. I checked out the article and the straw worked pretty well. I had 4 charges over,by .3 to .1 grains) out of 20. Funny thing though. The McDonald straw worked best with .5'. I tried 1' and 2.5' and they don't work as well.

I'll call RCBS for more input tomorrow.

There's definitely something wrong, I loaded 1000 rds with 4064 before my last P dog trip and maybe had ten total that went over and all by .1 RCBS should be able to figure it out for you.

My chargemaster overthrows about 3 out of every 50 loads, even with the mcdonalds straw in it. The straw helped alot though, used to overthrow almost 1/3 of the time. I don't find it to be that big a deal though, it's usally .1 grain, sometimes .2 grains. I just take a Lee powder dipper,from my pistol die set) and scoop out a few kernels until it reads what I want, then I take the charge. Still beats weighing charges by hand any day of the week.

I either pick out the offending grains with a pair of tweezers or dump the tray back into the hopper. I also get about 3:50 when using extruded. 1:100 using ball-type powders.

You might also make sure you do not have your cellphone on your belt or around you when using such delicate electronic equipment. I put my cellphone in the next room when I am using my Chargemaster.

When I forget to take it off, I get overcharges; that reminds me to put it elsewhere and concentrate on my loading.

I've also found that electronics mess it up, the chargemaster is a very precise instrument and electromagnetic interference cause issues. My two main offenders were the cell phone and a fan,with the cover over the pan).
