RCBS bench primer

Anyone else have problems with the rod that the the primer is dropped into (the rod that seats the primer into the primer pocket) getting stuck in the up position? In other words after I run the lever a primer drops in the seating rod run the lever again it seats the primer, run lever agiain it drops another primer in the rod but it’s stuck in the up position so I have to push it down with my finger to proceed. It sticks about 20% of the time

Mine had a bur on it that needed polished out. It also makes a difference if you're using RCBS or Lee shell holders. I use mostly Lee and they don't fit as well as the RCBS do.

on mine, this happens when the ram inside the cup starts to unscrew from the main rod. it then gets out of alignment at the top of the stroke, and the cup catches on the way back down

Hold the primer cup down on the spring and polish the end of priming arm with some fine wet/dry black paper. I bet this will cure the problem.

I'm with jghoghunter, on mine there were some defects on the rod. Simple enough to fix, I chucked the rod into my drill and spun it in emery cloth while watching TV. One rod actually had a little lip, I got rid of that and polished both rods. Runs like a champ now.

Did mine too when they were new. I think whatever the black stuff rcbs coats the rod with is just a little rough.

Never had a problem with my unit, but as others suggested, polish the rod & apply light dry lube. I'd chuck the rod in a drill & spin polish with emery paper or fine steel wool. That should do it.

I don't use the priming tubes so I haven't had a problem. The way I use mine, by the time I load the tube and figure out the problems with it, I can charge the tool one at a time and be done. :)

Ken, I don’t think it’s the tube. It’s the little primer arm and sleeve that drops down in the shell holder that can be rough and causes hang ups.

My RCBS Bench Primer is relatively new, but I haven't had any real issues with it. I haven't used it for small primers yet, but I have noticed that the primer seating punch drops down sluggishly. Yes, polishing these things would help.

Yes, the shellholder could make a difference.

Because I use the Dillon for handgun ammo with Dillon dies most of my shellholders are Lyman because I bought their set of shellholders. I do have same brand shellholders for the rifle dies I use.

I have a tube of Midway Mica that I use to dry lube the primer slides in the Dillon presses I have.

I just used mine for the first time yesterday. The small seating punch was slightly too large in diameter. I inadvertently operated it with no primer, and the punch got tightly stuck in the case. I turned the punch down from .177 to .172, which solved that problem. Only other issue is that the last primer in a tube doesn’t always want to feed onto the punch.
