RCBS 5-0-5 Scale Help

I had trouble with an inconsistent zero on my 505. Found that the scale was shifting enough on the level screw to change the zero. I put a quick fix on it by wrapping the leveling screw with a few layers of Teflon tape. It fixed the problem, that was years ago and I still haven't changed it.

Dbailey: this is why I asked because my screw is all over the place. Threads in but then is wobbly left/right/front /back. You wrapped the screw then threaded it in? I wiped all the parts with a dryer sheet too and it didn't help anything

Yes that is correct. Remove the leveling foot from the scale, then wrap the threaded portion with the Teflon tape and reinstall the foot.
If it's to tight remove some tape. if it's to loose just add some more.

I have found that to be as consistent as possible, two things must be addressed;
1. the hook on the end of the beam must be in a stable position with the pan hook in it.

2. I found I have to move the beam back and forth in the pivot to center it for each weighing. This is MOST important. Now, I use a quality flat bladed tweezers (same one used to remove granules from the pan) and insure the beam is centered in the pivot.

The exact position of the pan is way less important as the pan will automatically move till its center of mass is under the pan pivot. That is why the actual position of the pivot and pan hook is important.

Wow, I thought MY OCD was bad ::) Have both 505 & 10-10 scales. Did the file/hone trick on the beam of my 10-10. Now both scales match exactly & will pass all re-weigh chks. I'm going to leave well enough alone. My 505 gets very little use. Just a back-up to chk function of the 10-10 really. Seems any well used beam scale could benefit from an occasional "tune-up" Great input here. Dale

I did the tape suggestion on the leveling screw. Seemed to help a good bit. Cleaned everything real well and rubbed dryer sheet on everything. Seems to be doing alot better. Weighed same charge 12 times and the furthest it wandered was 0.1gr but 9 out of 12 were exact same.

This may be obvious to many but less so to those who haven't gotten up close and personal with their 5-0-5 scales.

That little "flag" on the end of the beam that moves up and down between the magnets CAN be knocked loose. Especially when transported in the box, separated from the scale as it's packed from the factory. If it's not totally secured to the beam, weight readings can be all over the place, even if you just zeroed it. It doesn't take much movement to make a big error in weight.
