Raton firing line...

Best I remember the firing line was all gravel/rock. Everywhere I've shot F class the firing line has been dirt/grass....You sit your front rest down(F open) and it dosen't move regardless how much you load/lean into it.
How does the rock/gravel affect your front rest in F open?
Does your rest move if you lean into the stop?

Thanks for any info......

I used the mud feet on my front rest and pound them in alittle. I just stepped on the base of the rest and planted it. Worked fine. ( Jim Murphy told me what to do before I went)

Here is a picture of the aforementioned Mr. Murphy scoring for Bob Depp. Note that the firing line is crushed rock and dirt. It is pretty firm. As Mike advised, you should pound in your feet a little and will have no problem.

A picture of two of the very best people one can ever meet....

Any gravel on the lines at Whittington is more likely to be cinders. Most of the material used to build 'em came courtesy of the Santa Fe railroad's use of coal-fired locomotives from days long passed. Be prepared to cover your action / loading port when the wind blows (almost always except early morning) 'cause the grit that gets kicked up will scratch most anything.

+1 on the two personalities, Mr Depp & Mr Murphy. Of the shooters I know it's always a pleasure and an honor to be among them.

I was told that the line, roads ect. were mine tailings.

+2 on Mr. Murphy and Mr.Depp. Bob reminds me of John Wayne in his wide brimmed hat.

Thanks for the replys.

Anything else I need to know about the range that might be helpful?

I'm putting together a range cart since I'm assuming it will be a long walk from the parking area to the firing line. I know the firing lines are very long.

Right now I plan to arrive around noon on Saturday. When is registration/check in and will there be an equipment check and so on?

Thanks

Cart - yes, you will rotate also.

Weigh in - absolutely

Show up early is always best

Water - bring plenty

.
We have mountains of volcanic cinders out here ( AZ) and it is used for every thing, like gravel /blue chip rock would be used elsewhere in the country

Only shot Whittington once, SOA in 2006. Unless things've changed since, you park maybe 15 - 20 yards from the lines except at 1,000 where the high end is farthest from the parking area.

Somebody please correct this if my memory's playing games again.

There will be a lot more vehicles this year. Plan on at least a short walk. In any case, we will switch firing points after every match. So, a cart is a good item to take.

That's an interesting variation! Kinda like musical chairs, but with targets!

I take it this'll reduce the 'hill effect' for shooters squadded on the low end?

Water and sunscreen is taken care of.

Will arriving around noon on the 17th be enough time to register/weigh in and such since practice starts early on the 18th?

And the firing lines are perfectly flat; no rear slope angle at all which will kill your frickin back unless you're in the younger set!! :-\ >:(
