These are very rare. Here is one in its natural habitat. Notice how it is bedded down near cover and on full alert.

Well maybe not so wild after all........

Three years ago the Dr told me that my youngest daughter--who was going though some serious medical issues at the time--would do well if she had a cat. Well, we are Doberman people but were petless at the time. Not being enthusiastic about cats, I did some research to find a large, low shedding, dog-like cat. The answer: British Shorthair.

So we found a breeder with a six old month male kitten. That one died within six months of FIP, a corona virus that infects kills one in 5000 kittens. That's when I also learned that cats are fragile as kittens and robust as adults, which is the opposite of dogs.

The breeder then gave us a six-year old black female (named Paris) as a replacement. I noticed that my wife really enjoyed the cat and our daughter was eventually moving out, so I asked if she wanted one for herself.

So we wound up with Charlie, the cat in the pic. We got him as a little kitten and he is now 2 yrs and 4 months old--almost full grown. He probably weighs 14-15 lbs right now and is all muscle. (His dad weighs 16 lbs.)

While Paris is a little skittish, they both like hanging out around people. I can usually get Charlie to come when I call him. He also talks to us a lot. She doesn't. Here they are side-by-side.

Since I am making a post about cats, it's very obvious I need to get another job and get back to working......
Cats are the best

My favorite pet is the Golden Retriever. But for many years, living in apartments we could have a dog. We have always gotten rescue animals. Sometimes you wind up with an animal that is just plain crazy but most, with a little effort have been amazing animals. Often mistreated you do have to work through some issues.

While in the apartment mode, we had Russian Blues. These cats are more dog than cat. They would play fetch, returning the item to you and dropping it on command. They would come when called and liked being around people more than other animals.

Rifle woman, when the army corps of engineers tried to fix the damage they had done to the Kissimmee river they left a brand new D10 on the river bank next to where they had partially finished a weir (a dam that restricts do doesn't stop water flow) over the weekend a big rain upstream in Orlando under cut the bank and the D10 is on the bottom. Two barges with huge cranes and 2.5 weeks later they gave up. its still up there if you want it???

Plus, I've never known a cat to protect our home or family, or even run to a human when scared.

A Maine coon would do that for you. They'll attack things that threaten their family. Famous viral video from a ways back of a lady letting her Maine coon out into the backyard where a black bear is hanging out and the ornery cat runs out there and jumps on the black bear, scaring it away. Bear couldn't get out of there fast enough and the cat just sits down where the bear was and preens. That encounter neatly summarizes and matches the attitude of the two Maine coons I've known.

Our cat alerts us to anyone coming up to the house. He snaps his head up and meows in a unique way. Just as good as a dog's low growl warning.

I'll agree that if you want a weapon and not a pet, a cat will never be as dangerous as a big dog, but I'm not supportive of treating and using an animal like that.

EDIT: maybe abetter way to put it is that most dogs like to have a job to do. Cats aren't like that and set their own schedule.

Reminds me of the stories I heard from old guys who built the Alaska Highway. Occasionally a dozer would get into som “muskeg”. One apparently got into some of that that was particularly loose. The operator had t scramble off his machine it was sinking so fast. Most of them that got into this goo are still there, al least in part.

We had female black long hair cat , Midnight or Midi for short. Used to take the cat with us when we would spend the weekend on are boat, and took her along on two week long boating vacations in Canada. Midi lived for 28 years.

I had a large long hair gray, Buddy, and a long hair runt tuxedo, Spitzer. Both males. Both were born five years apart, but got along from day one. Buddy was gregarious, while Spitzer was stand offish to other people. They both were my shadow. Spitzer if I left something laying out would aways lay on my stuff like one my bass guitars, cameras, or guns. I left a Glock 26 I had laying on my bed once, and I remembered to lock it up an hour or so later. I couldn’t find it. Finally saw Spitzer laying on the bed, and checking under him, there was the pistol. I had a CCW cat. Spitzer was also really psycho when it came to dogs. He would nonchalantly saunter up to any size dog, then without warning attack in full on berserker chainsaw mode. I guess because Spitzer was a runt, he felt he had to prove something to the World. He lived for 23 years, then he died from the H1N1 virus back in 2013 while I was out of town on a job for a five days. Buddy lived for 27 years. Vet thinks he had a heart attack. I still miss both of them, and just don’t want to go through loosing another one. The neighbor's cat, Hank likes to hang out with me when ever I’m outside.

Orange cats are the best to have. Everyone we've owned had a great "personality" if you can imagine a cat having one.
Meet Milo. My daughter acquired her the 2nd year of college. She's now a full time resident at our house. First house cat we've had. Had to have some teeth removed a few years ago and now she has this silly grin. We have been told that orange tabby females are on the rare side. She's dang sure a different cat.

I had a Maine Coon for a number of years when I lived in small apartments in big cities. My GF at the time thought me living on benadryl daily was a worthwhile trade off to have a Maine coon. His name was King Solomon, he could pull stuff off the kitchen counter while standing on the floor. He stretched out to 4 feet long, damn near!

He was more territorial than protective. I wouldn't have called him a protector in any sense. He just watched out for what was going to potentially ruin his chill. No more. No less.

But, that GF and cat are loooong gone, 20ish years ago.

Next house I will have greyhounds. Love those dogs.

For now, these two will do. This is Todd Geoffrey ((tricolor-American) and Francis Bean (black-abyssinian)
