Rangefinder

Can someone suggest a rangefinder for varmint hunting that will pick up a ground hog say at 700 yards with out putting me in the poor house LOL. I have the luxury of shooting out to 1100 yards but the rangefinder I have now is good perhaps to 350. Any help would be appreciated.

Use the search window and search for "rangefinder"... there have been a lot of informative threads in the last two months.

You didn't mention what brand or model you have but ranging that far to even a mound is not too bad. Ranging that small of target at 700 yards is going to be difficult at best. The least expensive are the Bushnell brand and I'd go for the 1 mile ones but you will still only be able to range a tree or rock, something larger than a mound, at that range. This continues to be a hot topic with the long range shooters everywhere. The Terrapin was the standard however they were pricey and the company no longer makes them. The next best that I've seen was the Swarovski Binos but again very pricey. I have the Swarovski laser rangefinder and I'm pretty sure that they wouldn't hit a gopher mound out at 700 yards. You'd think that with all the advances in electronics that someone would come out with a well priced, reliable rangefinder with enough power and with a small divergence beam that could perform at that range but...we are still waiting for it.

The beam divergence is limited by the laws of optics - they will not get smaller.

The power is limited by the law - laser devices that are sold to the general public are limited in power for safety reasons - it is the "Eye safe" threshold, and it is not likely that will ever be increased.

My laser puts out more than "eye safe" power, and comes with a bigassed sticker on it.

Pointing my laser at a person is the legal equivalent of pointing a loaded gun at them :( :( :(

No... but it does wonders for left over roast beef ;)

Thanks for all the reply's I guess what I am looking for is just not out there for locating a woodchuck at 6 and 7 hundred yards.

Any thought on the Bushnell Fusion 1 Mile 10x42 Laser Rangefinder Binocular 202310. Seems to be in my price range ! anyone ever used one of these?

There are a number of good rangefinders out there, but trying to range a small target is difficult. That needs a fairly tight beam and that pretty much means a more expensive unit.

Are there some larger things in the area to range?

I have a Bushnell ARC 1600 rangefinder but I found that for more than 300 or 400 yards on targets as small as crow or woodchucks, I prefer to use the rangefinding eyepiece on my Vortex Razor HD 85 mm spotting scope, together with the mil/mil stadia and turrets on my Leupold Mark 4 scope with TMR reticle and 6.5-20 magnification.

If you're careful, you can range a crow out to 700 or so with the mrad stadia on the Vortex eyepiece...beyond that, it gets tricky and error-prone for a target that small.

There was a range report of the Rangefinders on here not long ago. They were actual side by side comparisons. I don't remember on which thread I saw it. Matt

The link is on the Scopes Optics and LRF forum. It is at the top under Rangefinders and is the last post on page 2. If you click on that link it has a pretty good report on a bunch of rangefinders. It is one of the best articles I read on the subject. Matt

I tried a Bushnell, but I couldn't read the display. I don't know if it was a defective unit, but I don't think so because other people could (My vision isn't the best). But it's not adjustable, so I had to send it back. The Lieca 1600B replaced it, and it's a solid unit.

Very happy with my close-out Newcon 1500 from Bullets.com.

Woodchucks and related landmarks to 900 in NY terrain.
