Range finders that actually work??

Texas

Silver $$ Contributor
Looking for opinions from people who have used rangefinders for long range hunting. I do alot of this and have yet to find a rangefinder I am satisfied with.
I currently use a Zeis unit that is ok but not good enough. In daylight conditions with non-reflective targets like bushes, deer, a spot in the field, ect... it can range 500 yards at best. Sometimes not even that.
I need a unit that will range non reflective targets, in dirct sunlight as far as possible.
I'm interested in hearing your experience and recomendations. I have heard the Leica is decent. Any feedback on Newcon?
Thanks

I've owned Leica 1200, Bushnell 1200, Nikon, and Zeiss. None of them would range past 600 yards consistently. My Swarovski Laser, consistently ranges past 900 yards on bushes trees etc. . Then there is the Newcon and Vectronix, more money and about twice the price of the Swarovski. That old phrase, you get what you pay for is certainly very applicable to laser range finders ;D!

Vectronix is discontinued. G7 is your only option.

Is the whole Vecronix line discontinued, or just the Terripin model? I thought that it was just one model in their line up.

I was told that the Terrapin was discontinued. Not enough money in it. They are continuing the rest. I also heard they will fix and honor the warranty. It is what I have and can range 2000 to 3000 yards in sun. The only time I had trouble was in fog. MATT

What a shame......If you have never had the opportunity to check out the Terrapin, you are missing out on something pretty cool....

I have a swarovski and have ranged off dirt and rusted steel, and grass hillside at a mile, on deer at 902yds.

I have two friends that have the G7 and they work good. One guy just two weeks ago ranged his antelope at 727 yds, killed it with one shot using a GunWerks rifle with the Huskamaw scope. It was looking at him.

I had a Swarovski and they are pretty good, but the terrapin blows the Swaro away. The thing about the Terrapin is it has a mode where it will give you a triple reading. Suppose you range a deer on a mountainside, the first reading is the tree limbs, the second reading is the deer and the third reading is the ground behind the deer. I have heard good things about the G7 and also the Leica 1600. Never had either one so I don't know. Matt

Leica has a new 2000 yard rangefinder bino out with a ballistics program for about $3000. Have not heard any reports yet, but looks good!!

I'm in the bumming hard about Vectronic crowd, couldn't get my pennies together in time so I got the Leica 1600 which I've ran with my buddies PLFR 10 and in good conditions it's right with it till 2000 yards, in poor conditions I have gotten it out into the 1400+ range but had to bag it, most guys I now who run a Vectronix have a Leica to back it up if something happens or they just don't want to pack the Vectronix.
Knew a half dozen guys with a G7, none kept it past a year cause they will burn you at some point with a bogus range but a lot of that depends on terrain as well.

Why are you shooting animals at that range?

My laser will read to 10,000 meters and my rifle will shoot to 3,000 - I don't shoot animals with it.

I have been pleased with Leica. Mine is about 5 or 6 years old and has never given me any problems and it has been used hard. It also fits in my shirt pocket.
