Range Finder

Can you guys recommend a range finder that is good...I have been looking at the leupolds with the angle and the Leica...can you compare them...good and bad...Thanks..

I have never used one myself but from this post on LongrangeHunting.com made by Fiftydriver i would put my faith in the Swarovski range finders
http://www.longrangehunting.com/forums/f19/375-allen-mag-load-data-ready-pics-27717/index4.html

I had a Leupold MK 4,I think) and couldn't get it to range any distance. Friend had the same one and had the same problem. They were both sent back.

I am hoping for the Leica 1200 with the scan mode. The flat ugly one. But if I can, the Swarovski would be my prime choice, based on reviews.

Depends on how much you can spend and what features that you think you will need.

The Swaro is the hands down distance King from the ones mentioned-I love mine.
Leupold's best rangefinder RX-IV has worked good for me but does not have the ranging ability of the Leica 1200,owned one of these also). Really like the inclinometer on the RX-IV.

I had the RX-4, I was pretty dissapointed in it. You must have patience when operating this unit, sometimes I just wanted to throw it. Its pretty slow, and didn't range the distances I expected it to, so I sold it.

This site has what seems to be a very accurate reveiw on rangefinders.

I ended up buying the Leica 1200CRF. I have been pretty happy with it so far, it ranges out to 1000 yards on trees and rocks. Sometimes further. I have heard complaints about the Leica not working in snow or fog, but I haven't experienced this as much as the others who complained have.

If your serious about super long range shooting, I understand the Swaro is the best for under 1000 bucks. But that price was too much for me to swallow at the time of my purchase.

I bought the Swaro.

Cons:
$$$, I still have stuff to buy, but I decided to stop buying things twice anymore.

The holster leaves those beautiful optics compromised, no biggie. Gonna buy a different case anyway, but the plastic quick-connect works sweetly.

Most importantly that red circle is just too darn faint... come on guys, really.

Pros:
Glass is out of sight, as you know.
Distance is out of sight, as you know.
Nice strap you will love, but need to add some elastic to keep it close to chest.

I would absolutely buy it again. The quality is there.

Had a Bushnell and it worked ok on big stuff, accurate but needed
big things to bounce off, bought a Shepard and it was a nightmare
with reticle moving around with different power settings and promptly dumped it when the dealer started dragging their feet about fixing the scope and got a Leica 900 and couldnt be happier..
for any kind of hunting this is perfect ranges to 999yds and is
QUICK to klick on target and shoot.......there is more expensive
out there but this just works very well.......

Had a Leupold RX-4 and it is junk.Got a Leica 1200 off eBay and have checked it on targets and people setting targets at both 600 and 1000 yds and it is amazing.I got it after reading the rangefinder review here on the site.

I realize this is an old posting but I cant help but add my 2cents. Swarovski all the way!! Don't particularly care for large aiming circle I think the Leica's aiming square is nicer. the large amine circle hasn't caused me any problems though even at 1300 yards. The glass is just like having 1/2 of $1600 pair of binoculars. I prefer the monocular with my eyes anyway. I like it so much I went as far as even buying a 2x doubler for it for spotting at long range. needless to say i love my Swarovski!

One more thing I might add, Swarovski's customer service for me was as good as any and better then most. On a hunt somehow I managed to knock off and loses the rubber cup off the eye piece. I called to order a replacement and even though it was out of warranty and no fault of the range finder they sent me a new eye cup and rubber free of charge!!
