Range cart users, I need your opinions. (Pics added, FINALLY!!!)

Here is the NEAR finished prototype. I was sewing the trampoline material and the sewing machine broke. (plastic gears.....) SO.... I pinned the material in place and took pics. As you can see the seat folds up and out of the way for transporting equipment. It's made from 6061 aircraft aluminum with tig welds. The wheels are 14" solid rubber (no flat tires) The frame has plenty of areas where a golf umbrella can be attached with ease. (which I plan to do.) The bottom tray is rubber coated and measures 18x24 and will hold 200lbs easily. Large and strong enough for coolers (I use two coolers. One for ammo, one for drinks and snacks.) Plenty of room for F/TR and any benchrest rests and heavy bags. I'm going to install a bungee net and Velcro straps just to keep things from bouncing around. For highpower, not shown because I haven't finished the clamp yet, will be an arm that secures the spotting scope stand on the front corner of the tray. By placing it there the shooter can use the stand while still attached to the cart for the standing position. When recording the score of the next competitor simply lower the stand and sit down. No removing the stand until the 300yd line. When sitting the rifle can be secured to the cushioned bar that the shooting mat is sitting on in the pics. Some may find it easier to transport their shooting mat and jacket on the seat when moving. If anyone is intersted in having me make one for them please contact me.

Seat up with equipment on. Please note the arm extension with the shooting mat is an option for that.

With seat down.

Collapsed for transport. Wheels come off also. It will fit in a standard car trunk.

Re: Range cart users, I need your opinions.

I have a Creedmore cart that I've added aftermarket parts to make it more functional. Besides a seat, it should have a means to carry your rifle, and spotting scope & stand. One thing that I would like to add would be a sleeve to hold an opened golf umbrella over my head on hot days. Another would be a shelf on the bottom, below the bag, to hold a small cooler for snacks, water, and drinks. The cart should hold all of these items securely, as it seems the way from the car to the ready line is paved with gravel, and things seem to get bounced around, and then fall off. Should have attachment points for bungee cords.

The cart should be able to fold up compactly to fit in a car trunk.

Re: Range cart users, I need your opinions.

The bigger the wheels the smoother the ride for all you stuff.

It should also fold up so that it can comfortably fit in the trunk of a compact car!

That is why I use a baby jogger II as my cart, the big wheels and the shock absorbers on it make moving the stuff a dream. It glides accross the gound.. anyone at Perry knows how bumpy the gound is there.

Re: Range cart users, I need your opinions.

I built mine from scratch and priority one is protect the rifle i have mine disaster proofed .

Re: Range cart users, I need your opinions.

Golf bag caddies w/ add on pieces/parts to attach your rifle case, scope & stand, shooting stool, shooting coat, umbrella & rain gear have worked for me.

Re: Range cart users, I need your opinions.

Big solid, TUBELESS tires. Got replacements from Ray-Vin after dragging a flopping range cart all over, crushed the plastic rim too. No problems since.

Re: Range cart users, I need your opinions.

Check out the Harbor Freight welding cart. It's easier to fabricate sides on the bottom to hold small gear, or rifle barrel slots for your guns. I suggest bolting/welding on extra spacers on the most forward underside edge of the bottom so the cart can rest slightly tilted back. This ensures rifles and gear won't flop forward.

ON SALE right now for $49.99. You could pay almost that much just for the large-diameter wheels. Do note -- this cart has air-filled tires. Be sure to inflate before you go to the Range!!!!!

Re: Range cart users, I need your opinions.

Something for Fclass shooters would be nice. I would really like a card designed to hold a front rest, rear bag, rifle and ammo.

Would this work for you? Maybe could be adapted to better carry a big front rest.

I'm with Ben... Something stout enough to carry the rest & rear bags, but light-weight & collapsable. Also:
  • The larger wheels as mentioned
  • Space for ammo, spotting scope, shooting mat
  • Something that can be covered easily from rain or prying eyes
  • Stable enough not to worry about it getting knocked over.
  • Plenty of attach points for other stuff - small stool or lunchbox?
I have been mulling this over in my skull since last fall. I dont want to use a 100# landscape cart or a thin plywood cart designed to haul grass clippings.. Bill Gravatt had a nice rig at Lodi, nothing fancy but like a custom made 2-wheel cart from 1/2" sq tubing.

But I sure like the baby jogger idea, I am trying to find one and then its into the shop for a major retrofit.

Great post and lets see some more...

Rod, sorry, my own cart was built from wood and folds flat. But with this, get some hard foam rubber, cut {} slots for barrel and umbrella keepers and mount that to the cross piece with self-tapping screws. on the leading edge of the bottom piece, fit blocks of wood 2-3" high. This will make the cart lean back more. On the sides of the bottom you can tack-weld aluminum plate if you want fancy, or just cut sheet plastic from a home improvement store. Plastic panels can be attached with screw or even zip-ties around tubing. Run the plastic side panels up high enough that stuff like hats, muffs don't fall out. After transport you can transfer ammo and small stuff to the upper box. We've used one of these to hold 2 prone rifles and a target cam on tripod.

The hardest component to find may be the hard rubber blocks for the barrel keeper, but you can make that out of wood, with some carpet to protect the barrels. The nice thing about the rubber is that it can be cut to snap over the barrels so you don't need straps. Likewise, you can drill a hole transversely through the rubber, then slot it from the bottom and it will slide over the horizontal tubing with no fasteners needed. Imagine a block of fitted rubber clamping over broom handle.

Keep in mind that, if you build your own cart from scratch (instead of the harbor freight welding cart) you could easily pay $30.00 just for the wheels and axle.

Re: Range cart users, I need your opinions.

I use a baby jogging cart (three wheeler) on which I have attached a set of Kolpin ATV gun carriers. They bolt onto the frame of the cart.

The wheels of the cart are inflatable (I keep a small air pump with it) and easily removable so you can collapse it. I shoot FTR so I don't have a 320 pound front rest to cart around, but if I did, I could probably come up with some mechanism to carry it just behind the front wheel, on the step.

Re: Range cart users, I need your opinions.

yeah, the baby joggers are great, after I load mine down, it just pushes so easy, on pavement I can move it loaded with one finger.. it just glides accross the ground.. make sure to get the one with the shock absorbers.

Re: Range cart users, I need your opinions.

Where are y'all getting the baby joggers? I have seen some that were $200 or more. I need to find one at a yard sale!

Re: Range cart users, I need your opinions.

I got mine off of evilbay.. a few years ago for 50 bucks.. a friend of mine just picked one up for 25.00.. gotta shop around.. but the Baby Jogger II is the one to get.

Re: Range cart users, I need your opinions.

Great i will never find one now i have been looking since fall , i think the jogging stroller is the best way to go for a platform even if u pay for a new one . The creedmore cart is too tall and not much for the cost i have found to go with best and it seems to be it! The bike wheels definitely are the way to go.
