Rails for forend

Have any of you cut the center out of your forend to leave two rails riding on the front rest? Did you use a router and template? tablesaw? cut by hand? Looking for some ideas here to help make savage model 12 more stable in the rest.

I've never seen that done. I would think that 2 rails (meaning less surface area) would be difficult to maintain the bag shape as the sand would be constantly displaced and tracking would suffer. What type of rest set-up?

Edgewood bag on a Caldwell the rock front rest. I thought the gun might track better because the bottom of the front bag would not have to be dead flat and the rails would eliminate any rocking tendencies.

I use a mill to cut out the center to leave two rails 5/8 inch wide. I find it realy helps the stock track better and not try to rock side to side. I do this on all target stocks that I build. Eric

I have a couple stocks like this and they dont cause problems with the bag. They simply ride over it with less resistance than a flat bottom would. It works good and you will see more of it in the coming years in my opinion.

I don't have access to a milling machine but I do some woodworking and have a router. I was thinking I could make a template for the router to follow and use it to cut the center out. How deep do you go?
