R700 action truing - who can do?

Looking to true up a Remington 700 action
- square face of action
- recut threads? - not sure if needed - going to use non custom prefit Remage barrel
-square internal lug abutments
-lap lugs
-square bolt face if needed

Are there any gunsmiths on here can do this work and for how much?
thanks

A lot of folks can, but I would recommend buying a full custom. It ain't much different than buying a custom and it has much more resale value.

Thanks - I have one of my prairie dog rifles apart for a Remage barrel switch - was looking to tighten things up a little. Not looking for a benchrest action.

I have used Doyle Anglin of Dixie Gun in Georgia to true two 700s for me. I already had the actions, but if I to buy them and then pay $275.00 to "Blue Print" them, I would just spend the money on a Custom 700 Clone. Once you have a BAT / Borden etc., a trued 700 just won't do it for you, at least it doesn't for me.

I have had rem.700 receiver barrel threads off of center with respect to bolt raceway by .013"... I`m betting others are out there with more......

Bill, did you shoot it before and after?
Somebody mentioned checking the lugs, why? With a factory bolt it will not have equal bearing, the upper lug will not touch when in battery.

Bill, not picking a fight, but clear this up in my mind. .013 out in which way? Crooked or off to one side. How do you set it up to check this? How much is .013? Maybe the thickness of 3 brown hairs?

I think I could fix that with some shoe polish and epoxy]

I agree with many of the previous posts.
By the time you go to all the trouble and expense to true the 700 you might as well buy a custom. You will Money ahead in the long run in regards to quality and resale.
Been there done that for what worth.

No Problem Butch..... no arguing......
The way I check receiver threads is after aligning the action with respect to bolt raceway..... I screw in a barrel stub I made that that is true in 2 axises.... So when I say threads runout.....013" meaning TIR..... concentricity..... not squareness of receiver face...so actually .0065" off true center. Now with rem. bolt nose being around .155" diameter... you would have to leave more than recommended clearance on nose to close bolt.Which is a safety factor....considering Mike Walkers 3 rings of steel invention.....
If you do not check concentricity you can wind up binding bolt nose in barrel recess......
In doing all this and adding an oversize bolt body you have a real straight snug accurate action.....
All that being said.... were I not able to do my own work.and enjoy it.It`s questionable as to blue printings worth, comparing money spent for a custom action(which are not always straight )
OMHO mileage may vary.....

If you're starting from zero and don't have the equipment, then yes, buy a custom action, but if you're following this forum, you (or a friend) probably do have the equipment and probably have a R700 or two laying around, so why not?

The first RR action I did was about 0.010 out of concentricity. I determined this by the amount of travel by the compound until I was cutting 100% after picking up the thread. I broke 2 of the 3 tips of a threading insert trying to pick it up while rotating the spindle by hand as it would dig into one side until I figured out which was the high side. On the other hand, everything else was spot on for that action.

Yes there is probably a few floating around here that can true an action but to what level of expertise I cannot say. Of the actions I have checked the newer ones are pretty straight. The bolt raceway is pretty much never the same diameter at the back as it is at the front. If your purpose is for a varmint rig or a hunting rig then it might be worth a go if not much needs to be done.

PTG sells trued actions with their one piece bolt, mini 16 extractor and bolt stop for pretty reasonable. It's hard to beat a deal like that because if you added all those extras it would likely cost more than buying the action already done.

A search of the forum posts will reveal lots of people that do action truing. Some actions need a lot more truing than others.
