QuickLoad 123gr Scenar

Hi,

Maybe some of you have also noticed... In QuickLoad, the 123gr Scenar,6.5mm) is actually specified as 108gr. Has been since 3.0, I think I sent an email once but it has not been changed. For all of you who are simming with the 123 and getting higher speeds, this is why ;)

Jim,

You are 100% correct. The error is still there in my version which is pretty current. I just passed this same caution on to some folks on SnipersHide.com.

What is interesting though, if you run a prediction with RL15 or Norma 203, with a long throat, it still looks like 3150 might be do-able at 63,000 psi or so. That will beat a Rem 260, based on my experience.

With less powder on the same bolt face? Is that a fair statement? Could use a true SA reciever and magazine feed?

We will know in a week or so what the 6.5x47 will do with RL15 and Varget. Darrell Jones is working up loads right now with the Scenar 123. He was at 3075,with Varget) as of yesterday, and he thinks he can go higher. Some guys have claimed to get 3050 or so with the 123 in a Rem 260. I maxed out at about 2960 with a 24" barrel in my .260. A 28" would probably add about 40-60 fps.

The .260 will still do better with the heavier,139, 140, 142) bullets, but to shoot those, I'd go with a 6.5-284 anyway. But I think a 6.5x47 running a 123 Scenar at 3000+ will be a hell of a cartridge IF it can match the accuracy of Lapua's other small flash hole cases.

Yes, you can definitely mag feed from a short action. The cartridge is similar in dimensions to a 22-250.

Ironically, this cartridge, developed for 300m competition, may prove to be a heck of a whitetail hunting cartridge.

I will be keeping that in mind. I want to build a rifle for my girlfriend for her to hunt with after we get married. Currently, she is shooting my Sako 243 with 0.75 MOA being her norm. I was hoping for something a little different so that other guys and folks she talks with would be totally ignorant of what she is shooting. Based on what you are seeing and hope to see, a 125 gr NP, 120 gr NBT, 120 gr TSX or maybe even the 130 gr Swift would prove a very deadly combo out to 5-600 yards in the right hands. The combination of low recoil, muzzle blast and bc of the 6.5 bullets might just prove the best combo for what I am looking to do.

I'll probably use a RP action and about a 23" #4 Broughton barrel for maximum portability and ballistics. I do not want a muzzle break, and would like to keep the weight down to about 7 pounds. My 300 RSAUM weights in a tad over 8 lbs, but it has a heavy Zeiss on it.

I will be keeping an eye on the results you guys get with this one.

This just in. Darrell hit 3145 fps with a load of RL15 that QuickLOAD puts right at about 63,000, the max rated pressure of the cartridge.

He also tried H4350--and it gave better ES/SD, but the velocities were down around 2900. Still, if you're comparing the cartridge vs. a 6BR, the 123 Scenar has a better BC than almost any 6mm bullet except the DTAC 115 and 2900 at a relatively low pressure means long barrel life.

FYI, I'm NOT going to list the load amounts because pressure will depend on your throat and Darrell's brass has 2 full grains more water capacity than the samples I have.,Maybe they've lengthened the necks??)

I do like the case but what is the availability of the brass?

I have a 260 and switched over to Bob Cauturucio's 120gr vld. Better B.C. than the 123 scenars. At Byers,Co it only took 20 moa from 100 yards to get to 1000yards with Bob's 120's. I am pushing them 3160fps comfortably in my 30" broughton.

If i wasn't happy with my 260 i would definately go this route with the 6.5x47.

Grafs.com has 100,000 pieces,1000 boxes) scheduled to arrive next week. About 200 boxes have been pre-ordered. Darrell Jones is working right now with 100 cases air-shipped from a contact in Europe.

I just spoke to Bob this morning. He explained he's a little short on jacket supplies for the 120s but he's got some left. He just had Cataract surgery so that will slow him down for a while. Interestingly, his 120 has a .265" max diam. down near the start of the boat-tail. The 123 Scenars are skinny--about .2637 max diam. So, this gives the shooter some ability to tailor the bullet to your bore diameter. Based on the groups I saw from Darrell, I think he may get better results from the Cauterucio 120s. The velocity is there though--looks like 3100-3150 is do-able.

If you want to order Bob's bullets, his number,in California) is:,650) 583-1550

If you or Darrell want some 120's to try out i have some i can send until Bob gets some made up.

LAPUAA338@MSN.COM

Bob should have some ready in a couple of weeks.

Let me know.

There's really no need for panic everytime you notice an error in QL. There are hundreds of little errors.
Just make sure you have a basic routine in setup each time you change any component in QL.
I believe this software won't ever be corrected unless WE do so.
