Quick question on ammo storage.....

I have some open bottles of powder and will be moving in 6 months but not sure where we will be going or how long it will take to find a home....I am going to load up a few hundred .223 with the open components instead of storing them....

My question is has anybody ever vacuum sealed ammo..???? I was going to vacuum seal it and throw it in the locker with the rest of my factory ammo.... I normally store ammo in ammo cans but ran out so I thought why not just vacuum seal it....

Thanks in advance....
Shawn

Recently found 6 left over 6PPC rounds under the loading bench. Gun last shot in 1996, so ammo loaded sometime prior. Dug the gun out of the small safe, mounted a 24x Leupold, bore sighted, fired one round, adjusted scope an the next 5 made one hole. Didn't measure but no bigger than a .200. Yes 25+years old sitting on back of loading bench in basement. I don't get hug up on "properly" storing ammo.

You will be fine with Vacuum sealing them with a desiccant pack inside them for a long time. You can always buy another can when you have time. My ammo is all in cans, but I do vacuum seal my primers.

I have some of the MTM ammo carry/storage cases, use those to store loaded ammo in the smaller 50-100 rd ammo boxes that was not used on the last pdog/sage rat trip. All loaded ammo has been stored inside my house, so no temp extremes. Ammo that was loaded in '18 made some "obscene" results on sage rats last month according to the guy looking over my shoulder.

joshb,

Don't they eventually discolor or get grungy from the cardboard? It might take some time unless the cardboard is treated in some fashion.

Thanks,

I haven’t had a problem yet. Maybe over the long haul. I’ve only done it this way for about 15-16 years.

Ok , thanks everyone.... I just didn't know if it would hurt the loaded rounds to be under a vacuum for long periods of time..... Maybe I will just try and find another ammo can...

I think you could do an experiment. Now you have me curious! Would the bullets pop out under a vacuum? Hmmm?!? How much neck tension would you need?

if you are worried you can get the air out and as soon as you see the bag go flat, hit the seal button. This will remove the air and put only a seal on it, not a vacuum.

I bet freezer bags would work just fine. If you really want to double the protection put the bags in ammo cans with a rubber seal on the lid.

Ammo isn't like a piece of fish that goes bad in a few days. Store in whatever you have handy. Even temp extremes this time of year won't hurt it. The military stores and ships ammo to all environments in shipping containers. I can't imagine anything getting hotter than an ammo can sitting in the sun somewhere in the sandbox.
