Long Term ammo storage

Erik Cortina

Team Lapua Brux Borden Captain
This article makes sense and shows how we don't think about the small, yet obvious things. We load ammo everyday and make foolish mistakes because we don't know any better sometimes. This article is a great example of how important the little things can be.

I now know why when we had to ship ammo overseas for the US F-Class team they had us package ammo in small boxes and lay them flat inside of a bigger box.
Our ammo had to sit for about 3 months before we actually shot it. If the ammo was to end up pointing down, the powder would pack in the front of the case leaving an air gap between primer and powder. Laying them flat eliminates this concern. You learn something every day.

It’s an interesting story but a bit of proof would go a longer way because at least to me, the logic is not convincing.

For example, the difference in weight on the powder from having it stand straight up vs horizontally would be very minimal and certainly a hell of a lot less than say powder sitting on the bottom of an 8 lb bottle of powder. If this slight pressure in the case can in fact cause compression and kernel break-down in the short span of 3 months, there is absolutely no hope for us that has those 8 lb kegs sitting around for years. I guess I don’t buy it.

Sounds like an April Fool’s joke…. ;D

Images of how I have my ammo stored did flash through my mind as I read that article…. :-[ But you can almost hear the gears turning in my head as I wrote my response. LOL! ;D

Ok, so this one didn't go far. But the 1,000 grain threat took off! I guess all the fools are following that thread and didn't have time to read this one.

Happy April Fools guys! I have to think of how to get my daughter, it's a tradition we have trying to see who gets who every year. :)
