Quick load

Been talking to a fellow forum guy and he tell me I am missing out not using Quick Load. What do you guys think? Pros and cons. I am not a complete idiot, but I'm also not very computer literate. I have been re-loading for 40 + years ( oh good God!!) I have all the latest tools and gagits and I am very, very thorough. Tell your opinions. As always I value the opinions on this forum ( even the ones I don't necessarily agree with!) JVON

I would not develop a load without consulting several written sources, but I often consult QL also. It is also useful for out of the box thinking and advising effects of tweaking different parameters (bullet coatings, OAL, heavier/thicker brass, barrel length, etc.)

The learning curve is pretty steep. If you can master something like JBM for external ballistics, then QL for internal ballistics is probably within your grasp. But there are a lot of input fields, all with a well defined meaning, and if you are putting in inaccurate numbers, your output won't be right.

do you have a quality chronograph ?
the two tools, software and a chrono go hand in hand to allow the user to tune his lots of powders for his guns, safely.

yes ql is an excellent...TOOL...

but only as good as the tool user

I just bought Quick Load last month, It is pretty comprehensive asking for bullet weight, length, width, case length, cartridge length, H2.0 case weight, barrel length, barrel grove measurement, etc, etc, then the powder info, percentage of fill, etc. one neat thing is If you have a known accurate powder charge of a named powder, it will give you loads for use with other powders, I have a lot to learn about the program. but I enjoy it, I went to print off the manual and it was 125 pages, the printer ran out of ink before completing it.
But I load for 8 different calibers so it helps to compare and review chamber pressure and velocity of different powders, hopes this helps.

I'm not the most adept QL user either but I find it to be a valuable tool. Load manuals are incomplete, they can't possibly account for all variations and QL helps explore them all. Also, Chris Long has the barrel time theory that I use to good effect to make tuned loads without going extensive ladder testing.

When I first bought QuickLOAD I thought it was little more than a load book on disk. I heard talk of how it would save money but I could not figure out how. I found out after some research how to use QuickLOAD and my chronograph to adjust my barrel times for the accuracy nodes. It saves a lot of money by not wasting your time on powders that won't achieve the goals needed for accurate loads. In my opinion you need a chronograph and you need to read about the Optimum Barrel Time concept by Chris Long in order to get the most out of QuickLOAD.

As stated above you need a chronograph to get Quickload to output accurate data. You then change the powder burn rate within Quickload until the velocities match your chronograph velocities. Therefore you must "tune" Quickload for each firearm and powder used.

Below is one of the things I play with a lot and thats powder burn rate and barrel length. My .44 magnum below is tamed and a pleasure to shoot with the right powder. The green dotted line below is 95% of powder burnt and the purple dotted line is 100% burnt. With Quickload you can stand closer to the target and not get scorch marks on the target or set the target on fire. :D

I believe two previous posters mentioned using Chris Long's OBT in conjunction with QuickLoad. I know Steve Blair does also, as well as me.

I know there are a couple guys on this forum that say Chris Long's OBT is just a theory and has never been proven. But on more than one occasion I have plugged friends' pet accurate loads in QL and they have been right on one of Chris Long's nodes.
So I guess there at least five of us using QL and OBT.
