Questions for those who've built Skip's annealer

Finally decided to order up the stuff to build my own annealer based on the single motor, single feed version of skips annealer. Tired of paying someone else to anneal my brass or borrowing a buddies garage and time to do it.

My biggest question is how hot does the face of the enclosure get? I have seen painted wood cases and metal, but I work in the plastics industry and can build my own custom case from ABS, but it has a softening temp of about 220°F. I was planning on using a long rod shaped like an "L" mounted above the drum instead of a U-bolt for the brass stop to mitigate heat transfer to the case. I will also be looking into a gear driven feed wheel off the single motor as an option for hopper feed, as there is no need for two motors and speed controls being independent.

So far, $58 spent on the guts of the machine, already have propane and torch heads, can scrounge up the larger hardware, and should only need to get the smaller nuts and bolts. Helluva deal in my book.

Having built several different designs of gas flame annealers I really don't think ABS (or any other kind of plastic) would be suitable for the face plate of the annealer. Sure, you can shield the flame, angle it away from the face etc. but for anything longer than a few minutes you will get heat conduction somewhere. In the "skip" design the stop bar that the case rolls against is in the direct path of the flame. Using something with low heat conduction like stainless steel would help but I think every time you get a stuck case or minor glitch your ABS will be toast.

Thanks. I'll be doing the cake pan style, and like I mentioned I could use a long stop rod mounted above the cake pan to help dissipate the heat.

It's good to see pics of several versions as I mentally start the layout.

I did a low budget use what I got laying around annealer with a few bought items. I've seen some on YouTube that are a bare bones construction but seem to work and there's some very nice commercial looking ones as well. I haven't used it yet but I'll get some pictures of mine later.

Ok Dusty. Send me a pm about how the raw material is cluttering up your workspace and needs a home.

Ill send you a pic of everything. Only thing it needs is the wheel with the slot that rolls the cases from the hopper and the chute sheet metal made. Whole box full of top shelf electronics from marlin p jones.

I wish i would have known somebody wanted to build one. I have all the parts to build one and the box made but i bought a benchsource before putting it together

No,no! Send it to me! I'll buy the parts! I'm setting up a new corporate headquarters!:D:D:D:D:D:D:eek:

Dang! Too late! I'm getting slow!:(
