Questions for those who shot a .284 Winchester

The reamer and SAAMI spec drawings for the .284 Winchester indicate a .320 neck OD. The FL Redding resizing die is a .309 and the loaded Lapua brass reflects .3125 OD Many of the .284 match reamers cut with a .316 to .318 neck diameter. My reamer is ground to cut a .3165 neck and I have had flier issues with lighter/shorter hunting bullets. I am curious to what neck diameters others are using in their .284 Winchesters chambers. The reason for the .320 neck was so the .284 did not over pressure the Winchester model 88, 100 and older Savage model 99 rifles. I have not head any pressure issues with the .284 in a bolt gun.

My .284 Winchester PT&G reamer is a .313 neck with a 149 free-bore, it shoots the 162 A-max very well.
I've never shot any lighter bullets out of it...
It's on a BAT M..........

I shoot a 284 Shehane with a 0.313 chamber neck and an 0.310 loaded neck. I have not noticed any difference in accuracy with an 0.311 or an 0.309 loaded neck in that chamber. I normally shoot the 180 Berger VLD with COAL of about 3.200 or so. The AMax bullets seem a bit smaller in diameter than the Bergers and Cauteruccios sometimes a bit bigger so I sometimes have to use a different bushing with the same cases. The 0.310 loaded neck with the Bergers requires about 0.0127 neck wall thickness and that will clean up nearly every piece of expanded Lapua brass 100%.

The straight 284 reamer I used to install a couple of barrels for some guys here has a 312 neck but they turn for a 309 loaded round. Both say they needed at least 2 preferably 3 thou clearance or they have run into velocity spread issues - but they are good friends so could be chinese whispers.

I am looking at a 284 shehane reamer and was going for a 312 neck (but may consider 313 after that info thanks Tony).

Nat - My reamer print shows a .318" neck for use with WW 284 brass. Loaded rounds with Berger or JLK 180s have .311"-.312" neck dia. Accuracy out of three 1:9tw. bbls. (Bartlein, Krieger, PacNor) on a LA M700 & BAT 3LL has been outstanding.

I shoot a 284 Shehane and my reamer has a .313" neck, my loaded round measures .309" and it has worked for me so far. My COAL with 180 VLD's measures 3.220"

I plan on using a saami reamer with 320-323 neck chamber. Shooting a short action 284 win W/coal of 2.950. 162 Amax. Is this neck too large ? Will my accuracy suffer from this saami neck ? Loaded necks at 312 currently. Looking for advice before cutting this chamber. It's a hunting rig not a comp rig but want an accurate package despite.

It will depend on your expectations for accuracy.

Many of us who shoot 308s and consider international competition are faced with potential checks of chamber specs and a SAAMI spec on the neck of .344. Some who have had barrels made to meet this requirement have reported no determent to accuracy for NRA HP shooting purposes, even with considerable (approaching .010 in some cases) neck clearance on loaded rounds.

My 7-08 is set up with a .317 neck, shoots under ½ MOA at 200 yards with 140 Accubonds and 140SMKs and I don't have to worry about whether or not the brass will be too tight. For me ½ MOA is plenty of accuracy for a hunting rifle since I'm rarely in a hunting scenario where I could take advantage something with greater precision.

I'm used to .3-.5 accuracy in most guns i own. That's my general idea of an accurate hunting rifle. As I will use this one for groundhogs as well as a med-LR deer gun, I do want accuracy to that standard. Curious if that 320-322 neck chamber will be conducive to that accuracy.
