Questions about Schneider P5 barrel

Im looking for some corroborating information or stories regarding higher pressures or pressure problems with polygon rifled barrels.

I ordered a few Schneider 6mm 7.5tw P5 barrels and had one chambered in 6xc using a CIP reamer. It’s first outting was less than stellar, but I chalk that up to haste and poor practices. I tried a new powder that I wasn’t so sure about and it was all over the place.

I recently loaded up some new Alpha brass with my usual load of 38.5 gr of 4350 under a 107 SMK and had very consistent velocity and good accuracy. However, the load was leaving an ejector smear and the bolt was very difficult to open. After firing, the bolt needed to be struck with the heel of my hand to open. Fired cases will not rechamber at all. A load of 38gr also gave good results and slightly less pressure, but still was difficult to extract. I realize the chamber isn’t ideal for the Alpha brass so I decided to try sizing the brass in a Tubb (small, .22-.250 base) die and tried again. The bolt is still quite difficult to open after firing. I also fired a few rounds from a Wilson barrel with a similar chamber and there is only a slight resistance at the top of the bolt throw when extracting.

My next step was to try a second firing on the brass. I annealed, sized, cleaned, and reloaded the brass with a lighter 38gr load of H4350. Upon firing in the Schneider barrel, I found the pressure actually increased with this loading. The brass has an ejector smear and there is a small ridge on the outside of the case at .200 from the base. That it where the 6xc II reamer is larger and the brass is optimzed for. When fired in the Wilson barrel, the cases extract effortlessly.

I have read that the polygon rifling will produce higher velocities and pressures, but I am a little stumped as the loads I’ve been trying are fairly mild to begin with. These loads produced 3030fps fired over a Magnetospeed from the Schneider barrel. This is higher than I’ve gotten with other barrels and the same load, but the pressure problems worry me. I have had other reports of trouble with Schneider barrels, but I have also been told by the best that they are the best barrels.

Has anyone else had any similar experiences?

Not the same reamer. Schneider is the CIP, Wilson is an older one used by White Oak Armament. I don’t have a print of the CIP anymore, but they are close in dimension if I recall.

I’ve ordered a 6xc II reamer to try, but it is some weeks away.

Any chance the bore is slightly tighter?

I have shot out probably 6 5R barrels ( Rock Creek and Border) and only had pressure issues with one, a tight bore Rock Creek. Understanding that 5R and polygonal are not like for like, they are close enough that if your chambers and freebore are about the same and you dropped the load for the new brass, a tight bore makes the most sense to me. Do you have the shank stamp by chance?

I don’t have the stamp. I will probably try backing the loads down to the velocities I was getting before and see what that does for the pressure. Some say a reduction of 1-2 gr of powder charge is normal.

David Tubb loves Schneider barrel and was using them on his rifles. I dont know if he's changed. I thought he was shooting a 243 of some flavor.... maybe thinking of someone else its been a while since Ive seen him shoot.

I have a tight bore .298/308 Obermeyer 5R that shoots lights out. Now I knew when I got it to work up loads and found I get pressure at lower powder charges than others. I dont own a choreograph to see if velocities are comparable but again the barrel shoots great. Funny one of my go to loads is 40.0 grains of varget behind a 185 rbbt or hybrid. It hammers this at midrange.

I love schnieder barrels but if a barrel acts abnormally just remember- life is way too short to waste time on a barrel that isnt easy to use. Theres too many barrels out there that shoot better and are a joy to own to waste time on a boutique barrel that costs more, not exactly the same as the last 1200 they made, and has a long wait time to get. The bore dia on brux, krieger, bartlein barrels are the same as measured with deltronic pins as they have been for years. With these other barrels your gunsmith has to have an assortment of bushings and uses up a ton of time just evaluating each one before he even chambers it. Its hard to throw $650 out the window but its even harder to deny its junk and fight it for a year before you finally give up.

I have one Schneider barrel and it shoots great. It's not the P5, it is a 4 groove conventional. It does have the tight bore and it flattens primers, but that is the only pressure sign. I have not seen any or at least much difference in velocity with my 5R barrels or the polygonal ones I do have compared to the conventional ones. I did have one polygonal that copper fouled so bad I tossed it. I am like Dusty...if it don't get working right soon I quit.
I have to wonder what would happen if you sent it back...or if you even can. I mean, they don't even answer the phone. Customer service or the possible lack of it is one of the things that has kind of kept me away from them. Still, my barrel shoots so good that I would buy another one, if I had a chance {and found one}.

I have been running Schneider P5 8 twists in a 6.5 Creedmoor for a while now. I do my normal load work up and have not noticed any high pressure until close to the upper end as usual. I have a 6BR coming that will also be with a Schneider P5 with a 7 twist. My experience with the 6.5mm barrels is that I get very good velocity to charge weight, but not anything crazy. So far I have been liking the Schneider P5's and hope this will continue with my venture into 6mm's.
