questions about match rifle sights

I'm in the process of building my first tube gun (Eliseo RTS) and it will soon be time to purchase some sights. I've never shot one of these types of rifles before, and have only seen a few in person. From looking at a few websites (Creedmoor, Champion Shooters, etc.) it appears that all the components are sold separately like the actual sight base, then the iris's, inserts, etc. What are the more popular choices? Since I can't afford to try them all and find what I like, what are some good recommendations? I also plan to attend a few local shoots beforehand and ask some questions before ordering, but I figured I'd ask here as well.

I really like the looks of the Phoenix Precision rear sight so far, but are there any other popular choices? I plan to use the rifle for some long distance shooting as well as XTC, so the sight needs to work well for both. I've also heard talk of rear sights with adjustable shutters or diopters? I've looked at so many sights over the last few days that the features, names and terminology are starting to blend together...

Contact Scott Riles for your front sight http://www.rilesmachine.com/

The Phoenix rear sight is very good.
The Warner rear sight is THE best. --- Warner Tool Co.

Riles fronts, Phoenix and Warner rears are really good. If you are on a budget I have had great success with RPA rear sights (there are two for sale right now on www.usrifleteams.com) as long as you keep the slop out of the dove tails. Very simple to check and adjust. Only had to do it once on a sight purchased used.
The adjustable height fronts are superior but one can still get my with fixed height to get started. I shoot out to 1000 yds with a fixed height with no problems. An adjustable cheek piece is necessary though.
The iris' are sold separately. Generally a front iris adjustable from 1.8 - 4.4mm or so works well for all courese of fire. Rear iris' sized from .5-3.0mm work great assuming a normal eye-relief distance of a couple of inches. Magnifiers are available for both but the rules state that one can only use a lens in one or the other - not both. I use front lenses of.3 for XC and .5 for Long Range but I'm 52 and need that target a bit larger. The idea of magnifiers is not necessarily to make the target more in focus but a bit larger. One should always focus on the front sight. Even a target that is a bit fuzzy can be successfully centered.

JERRY,

HOW CAN YOU FORGET THE 'PNW'? - THE ONE YOU SET A 1000 YD 'SR' NATIONAL RECORD WITH??

Rear sight base
For a rear sight base all I have ever used is a Warner. Pricey but you get what you pay for. Available in a left-hand version. Order directly from http://warner-tool.com/ May be a wait time depending on where he is in a production run

Front sight base
Have used both the Tubb (on a T2K) and Medesha (on an AR) bases and think both are very good. Scott also sells a variety of other match rifle parts such as an adjustable buttstock, extension (bloop) tubes & cheekpieces
Tubb - http://www.superiorshootingsystems.com/T2K_ADD_ON_ITEMS-T2K_Front_Sight.html
Medesha - http://www.medeshafirearms.com/front_sights.htm .

Sights & Inserts
Gehmann or Anschutz or a combination. I would get a front sight insert that has an adjutable iris so you can get the right amount of white space around the black around the target that works for you (may actually be more than you think). For the rear sight having an adjustable iris to control the amount of light coming in as well as different colored lenses can really help in changing weather conditions . Don't forget sun shades for both front and rear. Having a lens in the front can help you see the number boards at 600 yards. As others have mentioned you want to focus on the front sight insert when actually shooting.
Contact Otto Weber at http://www.okweber.com/index.asp and he will help you through the selection process.

WRM - I built a R5 last spring, and outfitted it with a Phoenix rear sight/Scott Riles adjustable tall-boy front base. I went with the Phoenix model that attaches to a Redfield-style base as opposed to the model made to mount on a Picatinny rail so I could use the sight on any of my bolt rifles, which all have Redfield rear bases. Bought the rear sight base from David Tubb at Superior Shooting Systems.

As for the front & rear adjustable iris - front is a 22mm Centra 1.9-4.1 w/+.5 lens. Rear is an Anschutz 9775. This combination works very well for me in XC & LR prone matches (I'm 58yrs. old, and wear bifocals with both reading & distance corrections).
