Question?

Guys....I've been reloading a long time...since 1948 matter of fact and I've shot a ton of IMR 4895 which I have a good bit of. This powder was my favorite all the years I shot NRA Match Rifle in .308 Winchester for across the course shooting which I used at 200 and 300 yard courses of fire. My favorite powder for 6MM Dasher and 6.5 x 47 Lapua has been Varget but I was wondering if Varget becomes less apt for availability than at present I am wondering how 4895 would perform in the two calibers mentioned above. IMR 4895 on the burn rate chart is 12 numbers slower than Varget so possibly no danger in loading using commonsense and doing so in increments. Would appreciate a view or comment from you! NOTE: Excuse me fellows; I read the chart bassackwards! IMR 4895 is FASTER than Varget!

Varget is WAY slower than IMR4895. I wouldn’t use 4895 in a Dasher without a really light bullet, I wouldn’t use it at all. To me the 308 powders are too fast for the Dasher and the Dasher powder is too slow for 308. 4895 is my 308 powder. Varget and N140 are my Dasher powders.

You're right....I read the chart WRONG!! I shoot the 105 gr. bullet in the Dasher! Thanks for your reply!

N140 in a Dasher is likely a good choice...but it is quicker than Varget IMHO. N150 is more akin to Varget and is super in the 308 with heavier bullets. RE15 is also excellent in the Dasher, but supplies may be drying up due to European military requirements.

Agree, IMR 4895 in the Dasher is good for bullets up to around roughly 90 grains.
Above that weight, you tend to run better with the ones close to Varget.

I'm not seeing much of either the IMR or the H4895 these days, and the availability of the Varget has been better. Things in this respect have been very different since the elections, C-19, wars, etc.. But I don't think getting Varget has been difficult the last three or so years.

OP may want to consider playing the new game where the use of web sites like Ammoseek or SHootingBot will help find the things that are hard to get in a timely way. The old email methods that worked before the election are not fast enough to score things that are in demand and in short supply these days.

Getting a good powder for the Dasher isn't going to be hard unless you fixate on ones like H4895 at this time. For whatever reason, that one is unobtanium for the last two or more years now. Anyway, here are current places showing Varget, but nobody has IMR or H4895.

The Boys at Deep Creek set records with 103 vapor trails -105 Berger’s pushed with H-4895, a few used RL-15, I think I was the only one running Varget. When I switched to the BRX Varget worked best for me but not in the Dasher.
