Question

hahahaha. thats what we all say. :D;)

oh, and back on topic. I had heard w-a-y back that varget was pretty much a temp stabilized 4064. is this actually true?

Well, back then I didn’t know about neck tension or neck turning, touch, jamb, jump, the benefits of small primer brass, trying different primers...etc. Heck.....I was using RCBS dies and shooting off of sandbags!;)
I’ll put all I’ve learned into some new loads and see how much better I can do. With my new rests, tools, dies and Lapua brass, I’ll be shooting bugholes all day long!.......if I do my part!:p:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:
I haven’t heard that 4064 rumour but it is one my old favorites.

In my 308, IMR 4064 shoots better than Varget group wise using 150 grain Sierra Pro Hunter bullets.

IMR / H 4895 also works quite well especially with the 125 Nosler BT's.

The Wonder of Varget ?
Having shot Palma ( .308 with 155 Gr. at 2984-3017 ). Lots of Powders have been tried for a Replacement.
N-150 will do it the Guy's in Canada use it.
4320 comes close ( less Velocity )
4064 same as above.
R-15 will work
4166 8208 ? Hi Pressure to get the needed Velocity
H4895 will work ( some say original Palma Powder ).
In a .223 a lot of theses will work ? I used them up after buying them to replace Varget.
Best of Luck
Thank you!

Staball 6.5 is slower burning than Varget and will not work as a replacement.

If you want a good Ball powder that replaces VARGET, I suggest Win-748 or Ramshot TAC.

Trying Imr 4166 now
Next H4895
Followed by Imr 4320
Last Imr 4064!
Results will be posted!
I shoot midrange competition at Camp Atterbury!

4320 Is Good Stuff

To the OP - I wouldn't get hooked on IMR 4320, as it has been discontinued. You can still find it in stores, but when it's gone, it's likely gone forever.

As many have noted, there are a variety of powders that have similar burn rates as Varget and can be used for loading similar cartridges/bullet weights. I wouldn't call any of them a "replacement" for Varget. Will they work? Absolutely. But they will never have the exact same properties and characteristics as Varget.

Rather than trying to find a suitable replacement for Varget, I would suggest an alternative approach. When I see that I am starting to get low on Varget (or any other powder, bullet, primer, reloading component, etc.), I immediately start looking online every morning. I check directly at five to ten well-known online vendors, as well as at ammoseek.com, which takes perhaps a total of five minutes, or so. Within some period of time, I have never yet failed to find some Varget before my supply ran out. In other words, keep track of your inventory and plan ahead, and there won't be any reason trying to find a replacement for Varget.

Interesting Discontinued ? I tried to find any thing on that ?
Good Powder used for Years , shame.

FWIW - that info came to me straight from an IMR technical rep during a phone call a couple or three months ago. Not long after that, IMR4320 could still be found at some online vendors, but that will likely last only until existing supplies are sold out.

Is there a temperature stable powder that works like Varget other than IMR 4166 or Hodgdon H4895. Varget was very stable across a wider range of of temperatures. I believe H4350 was the best during the test I read!

Varget is ADI2208, made in Australia.Wonderful stuff. Not sure where the IMR4064 is made, now that Hodgdons rule the world. ( Not a bad thing from my perspective, as we may start getting a better supply of powders down here at the bottom of the world) Having said that, we can't seem to get Varget here at the moment either!

No actual experience with it, but I've read that Shooter's World has a powder comparable to Varget. Possibly their "Precision" powder? Midsouth, P/Valley, or Graf's may have it in stock, but things are getting dire even with the oddball powders that were in plentiful supply a month ago.

I don't know where you all are from but in my neck of the woods , there's no primers , bullets or powder . I'm cutting down on the rounds I shoot each week hoping my inventory doesn't run out . I'm always checking on line and locally with no luck. One way to kill the sport.

Shooters World Precision is a Varget replacement. I think most people are getting a little less velocity with Precision than Varget. I am getting some really amazing groups with it in 308 with both 125 gr. and 168.
