oh, and back on topic. I had heard w-a-y back that varget was pretty much a temp stabilized 4064. is this actually true?

Varget is cut shorter. And cut more consistently (4064 has some really long logs occasionally.)

Charge weights do seem to be pretty close though.

Recently found a couple of pounds of 4166. Seems promising in the 308 with 155g. Tried a couple of max loads in the 223 - velocity well down - dropped off the target at 600, gun zeroed for 2980fps, so who knows what velocity...unusual for a 308 powder not to perform in 223. Haven't had much chance for testing yet - but 5 rounds at 45.5 gave a 30fps spread at 1000yds on our electronic targets, terminal velocity of 1170fps with Nosler 155 competition projectiles, which ain't my favourite. I have just about enough Varget (ADI 2208) for the rest of the season - but planning to work up 4166 next week as a back up. A local shop still has a few pounds left.
