Question regarding Nightforce scope

Hi... I'm new to the forum and had a question regarding Nightforce 12x42 BR and NSX. I'm planning on getting a Savage 12F 6BR to start shooting 600+ (A member at my club got me hooked by letting me shoot his 6BRX rifle). I've never had a Nightforce nor any other reticle beside mil-dot. So my question would be, for long distance would mil-dot be useful in benchrest or shooting F-Class. I was looking at getting the Nightforce 12x42 BR with the CH-3 reticle but its so hard to get my mind off the mil-dot and 1/4 MOA clicks. Or would you get the 12x42 NSX model with CH-3 reticle. So many choices, but I would like to get opinions from others since you guy's/gal's have experience in this world of benchrest, F-Class, 1000+ yard shooting.

Thanks,

Scott

Scott, welcome to the forum, As to your questions about NF scopes, the reticle to me that is the best for LR target/precision shooting is the NP-2DD and I have that reticle in 2 different BR scopes. The NXS gives you the advantage of side focus and is more comfortable shooting off bench or prone because of that, but the glass is just as good in the BR series, and they are 5-600 dollars cheaper. Good luck!

Frank,

Thanks for your input.... yeah I was looking at that also but was wondering if the lines being illuminated would make your eyes harder to focus than just the dot being illuminated. I will have to think about this:)

Another plus for the NP2-DD reticule, and the glass in the BR scope is a bit clearer than the NXS...

I have one with the np2-dd also one with the crosshair connected to the dot I think the ch-2. I would go with the standard crosshair first and the np2-dd br second for target shooting. Don't even worry with the illumination as for target shooting you will never use it.

I had a BR model with NP-2R and I love it.

The subtensions are in MOA, so no Mil.

And the great advantage of the BR over the NXS is that the BR models has 1/8 MOA clicks and the NXS are only 1/4 MOA clicks. (that is suposed to change in a near future as NF says they will release some NXS models with 1/8 MOA clicks at the end of this year...)

Good to know:) Thanks for all the feed back! By the way, do shooters prefer using a 1 piece scope rail or just mount the rings on the reciever?

I'm a crosshair reticle fan, as I don't see how there is a 'better' reticle. But I think you'll be disappointed with the CH3 as it's incredibly hard to see. On the otherhand, the CH1 is perfect at medium-fine.

Also, unless you need to range with mildots, there is just no purpose to em. Use the turrets.

Another vote for the Nightforce Benchrest models. I really like the 1/8 moa clicks, screw-on lens caps, and have no problem(s) with the objective end focus. Have the NP-2DD reticles in all 3, and for me, have no need for any other type. Can't think of a single thing that I would like to see changed on the BR models. ;)

I have two NXS (mine are 12-42x56 scopes) scope with the CH-3 reticle and love them. The "cross-hair" reticles stop 1/2 moa from the center of the dot and this works out great for making wind adjustments. Also these fine reticles are VERY, VERY good for shooting at bullseye targets.

I have two BR models with NP2DD, and they are great for long range. But my first NF was a NXS with the CH1 reticule. I really liked it. Just right for holding off on those 600+ shots.

I'll second the CH-3 reticle. Both of my BR series have the CH-3, and they work perfect for bullseye targets as Travelor has mentioned. 500 yards is max, where I shoot ground hog matches, but I believe that the CH-3 reticle will work out to 1000. It has a very fine dot.

CH-3 is a great choice..The fine crosshairs don't clutter the scope, and the floating dot centers the eye and target increditablity well. The floating dot also make bracketing(thus the eye centering everything) a F-Class or IBS X ring very easy..Works really well when the mirage is running hard, the score rings a hard to make out..You'll love it..Travelor bought two after looking thur mine..

I shot my chum's 6BR rifle with a nightforce on it. Made me sick after going back to my sightron. I would love to have one on every rifle I own only one small problem can't afford not even one LOL Lou
