Question Re Shipping to FFLs

This problem must be regional. You can’t ship a gun via usps, fedex or ups in Las Cruces.

I’ve tried…
Show them in their DMM where USPS ships long guns from a non-licensee. Speak to a Postmaster with that information. It is all spelled out what they are supposed to be doing. Move up the chain further if needed.

USPS will ship a non-concealable firearm, frame or receiver, from a non-licensee in any state. It is in the mail manual, the post master can look it up if so inclined.

The problem is, that many of the postal employees don't always know what is in the DMM (Domestic Mail Manual), can't be bothered to look it up, have an agenda, make assumptions, or a combination of those. I was once refused shipping. I assume that the employee proudly informed the Postmaster on how she foiled some wrongdoing attempt by a customer. The next time I went in, she apologized and said that she was sorry for refusing service, and that her postmaster said that I was following their DMM rules exactly. I never had any issues at that post office again.

Recently, I was going to ship a bare action to a gunsmith for some work. I stopped at the local post office that I deal with regularly. My clerk told me long guns were not a problem, but need to be mailed registered.

You can ship a long gun via USPS. You do not need to tell them it is a gun. Read the rules. Follow the rules. Get your label online. Make sure the receiving FFL will accept it from an individual. Place a copy of your drivers license in the package so the receiving FFL can log it into his book.

I'm going to ask my friend how he ships his guns. He is a collector of handguns. We were talking, and he said his area of collecting is mid century target pistols. I told him that I had a HiStandard Supermatic Citation that I had bought to shoot Bullseye. His eyes bulged, he said you always buy Hi standard, never sell. I bought mine when I was eighteen for $68.

You absolutely do need to declare that it is a firearm. Here are the rules that you can read and follow.

From the ATF website FAQ:

"May a nonlicensee ship a firearm by common or contract carrier?

A nonlicensee may ship a firearm by a common or contract carrier to a resident of his or her or her own state or to a licensee in any state. A common or contract carrier must be used to ship a handgun.

In addition, federal law requires that the carrier be notified that the shipment contains a firearm or ammunition, prohibits common or contract carriers from requiring or causing any label to be placed on any package indicating that it contains a firearm and requires obtaining written acknowledgement of receipt.

[18 U.S.C. 922(a)(2)(A), 922(a)(5), 922(e) and (f); 27 CFR 478.30 and 478.31]"

Well, my package will not meet their stringent measurement requirements. I think it’s 9 inches wide 7 inches deep 48 inches long. That just does not fit my needs. Oh well, something else that I will just absorb.

Thanks for all the input and help. I really appreciate you guys out there.

See you on the next one!

Use USPS if shipping to a FFL for repair or alteration or usps registered mail if you want the best security given to your shipment in route.

I would like to see that in written documentation from the UPS Store administration. I have to say that I am skeptical based on known long time policy that the UPS Stores (which is not UPS) would not accept ANY firearms shipments from non-FFLs, and for that matter, probably FFLs as well. I also would like to see that documentation refer to a true non-licensee to FFL shipment, not something that uses some Ship My Gun hijinks. While I am skeptical, I would be happy to see someone prove that my skeptical thoughts are now not warranted.

you asked, and you have been told a thousand times YET you want to display your complete lack of brains and argue with so many of us who have used this service and have found that it works FLAWLESSLY, but go ahead and tell us all about the law while you sit there and say you no nothing of the law, the law does state that a firearm that is legally owned{think, if you can the FFL YOU CLEARED TO BUY THE FIREARM} does not have to be cleared again, the only one is the one on the other end THATS WHY YOUR SHIPPING TO AN FFL, DUH! BUDS GUN SHOP OWNS SMG. and they are telling UPS that the transaction is legal, so ipsofacto they are the shipping FFL, no go away!

I ATTEMPTED to read that. That's enough said on that.

Just use the USPS and be done with it. Very simple and straight forward. And, you don't have to deal with the morons at the UPS franchise stores. On my labels I have PPR as the company name. No need to attract unwanted attention either. Good luck.

And if you are following the law and a postal worker gives you any flak, demand to see the manager. Just be sure you have a copy of the recipient's FFL~!

I believe in Colorado now, if you buy a gun out of state from a private seller, it now HAS to ship FFL to FFL. No shipments from the private seller
