Question on testing factory ammo in AR15

Folks last week I got a flash sale notification from gun deals dot com. It sent me a message on a Anderson am15 Ar15 rifles on sale for $384.00 ! That for the whole gun ! I have some high dollar AR15 but could not pass these up. I followed the promos and it was through sportsman guide catalog company. I called and after 1 hr being on hold sales rep came on sure enough $384.00 plus $6.00 shipping to my FFL I got It today my dealer charged me $26.50 for transfer. So total out door was $ $416.00. Going to do a text with factory ammo this week. I have about 30 brands of 223 cal with all different weight bullets. I have had detached Retina operation last year and don't see that well any more even with high power scope.
Question ..... do you think I would be wasting my time once I sight this gun in at 50 yards use the 50 yard as a base for testing all this ammo for groups ? I just want to know what brand and weight shoots he best out of this cheap gun and was wondering if a 50 yard test would be ok compared to 100 yards ? I can shoot 100 yards at range so not to big of deal. Your thoughts. Thanks. Marty

NDAR15MAN, it seems like a good place to start, all things considered. Sorry to hear of your eye trouble.

At fifty, you'll probably have three segments in your results - 'Definitely', 'Definitely Not' and 'Maybe'. I hope 'Maybe' doesn't end up holding most of the participants.

A number of clear winners may emerge.

Best of luck.

Yep I shot today at 100 yards. Shot 6 different brands and weight of bullets. It has 7 pound stock trigger. I could tell that Detached Retina operations has hurt my eye sight even with high power scope. I am going to put a red dot on this cheap AR15 for in woods coyote hunting. Only will be shooting 100 yards with this gun. I have other AR15 guns and bolt guns for 600 to 1000 yards. But I do want to know best accurate factory ammo it will shoot since I don’t reload. I might hold off on more testing till I get the hipertouch trigger put in it in 2 weeks or so.
That trigger goes down to 2 1/2 pounds. Look up the you tube videos on this trigger. It is unbelievable ! Some guys can get 5 shots off in 1 second. No kidding. But I will say this $390.15 Anderson AM15 (AR15) does shoot good for the money. I did shoot some 1 3/4 inch groups today with real cheap factory ammo. Still have about 20 different higher dollar factory brands and weights to shoot. I am thinking it will shoot 1 inch at 100 yards with the 2 1/2 pound trigger. I was just wondering if I tested at 50 yards if I could really call it that good of a test since I have eye sight problems ? Marty

Marty, What's the barrel twist? That will help on the ammo. Mine are 7 or 8 twist and prefer heavier 75-77 grainers. I have had good luck with Federal Gold Metal Match, but for $1 each they had better shoot. I have also had real good luck with IMI 77 grain and Hornady Steel Match 75.

I honestly think you should keep it as is and don't invest another penny in it. Shoot whatever you can find cheap and enjoy a >$400 AR15!

50 is as good as 100 for a rifle like that. 100 makes it a little easier to see the differences, but you can expect 100 yard groups to be very close to 2x the 50 yard groups, especially on a calm day. I've done 50 plenty of times without issue. The only problems you run into are with very accurate rifles (groups are too small), and your zero can get a little squirrelly up close (but 50 is not that bad). Generally, I would go with 100 given the choice, but if your vision makes 50 easier, then go for it.

Ok. I am going to test I think at 100 yards when I get hipertouch trigger in it in 2 weeks. I am thinking I should have bought a railroad car of these AR15 for $384.00 marty
