Most of the time it is a good place to start load development with very similar bullets (weight, surface area, ...)
I have found some bullet manufactures have VERY reasonable max loads like Berger. Their reloading manual
is modest IMO. Layman on the other hand is HOT imo. When they say max load they MEAN MAX load.
Always keep a few different books around to cross check and compare.
