Question on Dies

I just became the owner of a free set of dies they say Redding 6PPC Competition bushing neck size die #58319 in what appears to be in excellent shape. The box contains two calibrated head dies. 1 size die, and 1 seater die. I am contemplating getting a 6PPC bolt gun. I am a novice for sure. I haven't the faintest idea how they work? When they say bushing die, does that mean I can get another bushing in say 6BR? Thanks Lou

Your die set is for the 6PPC cartridge. No, you can't get a 6BR bushing and convert these dies to that caliber. They don't work that way. Dies are caliber specific. Dies are screwed into the reloading press. Unscrew die #1 and the decapping rod comes out, also a bushing if one is in there. A bushing is droped into the die from the top. Bushings control the neck diameter of the fired case when resized. Bushings come in sizes so you can choose how much and what diameter you want the sized neck to be. The decapping stem punches out the fired primer when the case is resized. The calibrated top allows you to adjust the amount of neck to be sized. Do you want all the neck resized, half, 1/4? The bullet seater die is just that. When a bullet is placed on top of a sized, primed and charged case it is run into the die. The die will only allow the bullet to move into it a certain amount. The case then traps the bullet in the case neck. The adjustment on the top of the die allows you set the OAL (overall length) of the completed round in 1/1000 increments. I take it from your post you are new to reloading but do have some equipment like a reloading press, scale ect. If not you will need them.

Good shooting, Jim

Jim, Thanks I am 73 and have been reloading for as long as I can remember but never did any of what you guys do ( precision reloading etc.) I have always bought redding dies the B sets. but I have a 6BR Savage 12 6BR right bolt left eject. that i got on some recommendations from you guys. Liked it so much how it shot that I have ordered another in 6.5-284. I have never had a rifle such as these in the past mostly hunting rifles that were very good shooters. Just bought a Mauser (Argentine) 30" SS barrel 308 caliber don't know what make barrel but it's 1.350 in diameter with a bench rest stock, haven't been able to shoot it yet. This thing is ungodly heavy, I can't even shoulder it. I am joining a club that has 1000 yard range and shorter. As soon a I become a member I expect to do some LR shooting. Probably in all my years the longest kill on a deer was 500 yards that is the extent of my LR shooting. I hope to be able to experience what most of you have all along with what time I have left. lou

Lou,
All this precision reloading and long range shooting is just like the hunting bug. Once it bites you your doomed. I see the fever already started in you since you first shot the 6BR. Wait till you get your 6.5/284 and pop a cap at 1 thousand yards! You may not be as knowledgable as some here but I bet you can tell one hell of a hunting camp story. Welcome

Good shooting, Jim
