Question on clear coating stock

I have a cheap microfit wood laminate stock that I initially polyurethaned. I've decided that wasn't a great idea and want to clear coat it. Should I remove all the poly or just wet sand lightly and spray it? Keep in mind it's a cheap stock so if it gets messed up it's not a big deal

You can even use 220 to scuff it. Use some foam behind the paper so you don't get flat spots on the curves.

Well then, start with 60 and work up to 1200. Keepsanding until you make weight.

I have 4 or 5 Micro-Fit stocks shot with Poly. (spray cans) Thin coats work best. All you're after is to protect the Laminates/Wood from fingerprints and dirt so what ever you do is good.
Sand it smooth with whatever you feel is good, shoot it again with "thin" coats for a better finish. More than coat one will be better in the long run. If you're using "spray cans" heat the can in hot water. That will cause more pressure in the can and maker a finer spray. Scratch pads will also get the job done.

Mine has automotive clear coat. Something like 5 coats. Really nice.

Most of the "polyurethanes" are just inexpensive varnish with solvent additives. So treat them like varnish if you want to refinish. Sand thoroughly, preferably wet sand to keep the clogging down though at least 400 grit, and be sure to wipe off all the residue before re-coating. I used a premium varnish on my Richards MF, spraying the last coat with an automotive HVLP spray gun. Came out beautiful. Captains varnish is a superior leveling and glossy varnish.

Another good product is 2k Clear Glamour. It will lay down very smoothe. It is a two part epoxy clear coat for auto body work. Impervious to a lot of chemicals. The hardener is injected with a button on the bottom of the can. Once injected you have 24 hours to use it up before it hardens in the can. I have done three stocks so far with it and love this stuff.
