Question on 100 yard zero with 20 MOA base for Savage

I have a 12 BVSS in 223 and a range where I can shoot 600 yards. I currently have standard Leupold two piece bases and am nearly out of scope adjustment at 500 yards. The scope is a 1" tube Leupold 6.5-20X.

Question- Will I be still be able to achieve a 100 yard zero with a 20 MOA base like the one made by Farrell?

Thanks.

Something does not sound right. A 500 yard zero should be only about 10 or 11 MOA from 100 yards, give or take. Almost any scope should be capable of that, with a lot to spare.

You should optically center your scope and then see what sort of adjustment you need to make for a 100 yard zero. It should not be much. If it uses up a lot of your adjustment then you may have incorrect bases.

With a 20 MOA base you may or may not be able to get a 100 yard zero. If you do it will use up most of your adjustment. A 20 MOA base is more applicable to the longer distances such as 1000 yards. Most 600 yard shooters, me included, do not use any sort of tapered base, with no problems.

A good alternative to a tapered base is the Burris rings with inserts.

A 6.5-20 Leupold scope with the 1" tube only has about 50 MOA total elevation adjustment in it. That's total. That means that you've only got 25 MOA from center to the very top. And that's with the windage at dead center. Less if you've got to crank very much windage into it.

Start out by putting your scope at its mechanical center. Then count how many MOA's of elevation adjustment it takes to zero it at 100 yards. Deduct that figure from the theoretical 25 MOA of up adjustment that the scope should have in it. Find out what kind of drop your load has from a 100 yd. zero to your 500 or 600 yard target. Does your scope have enough clicks in it to make it to that distance or not? That will tell you the story.

You should not have any trouble getting a dead-on 100yd. zero using a 20 MOA base on your Savage. I've done it on Savage actions with 20 MOA bases from several different manufacturers and with several different scopes. No problem!

Thanks for the responses.

Yes, I have centered the reticle when installing the scope. I can easily get to 500 yards with the adjustment I have but don't have much adjustment left. I figure that the 20 MOA mounts would give me more flexibility and range but didn't want to loose the ability to zero for 100.

Thanks again.

Yes, I have one of those 1" tube 6.5-20 Leupold scopes. Very nice, but not a lot of elevation adjustment. Am not surprised that you're running out of adjustment.
