Question For the MXX-123 Testers

First, a big thanks, to James,Jerry,Danny, and Dennis for taking their time to test and evaluate the new DI scale. You guys are all Rocket Scientist in my book.

Here's the question. My reloading area is in an unheated basement. Sometimes the temp goes below 50. What is that doing to my scales readings, how does a low temp effect the operation of my RCBS Chargsmaster?

Thanks, Happy New Year...

Chuck,

I can't say how it would affect your Charge master since I don't own one. Perhaps some of the other guys that do will chime in.

Personally I feel the more important question is how temperature and humidity affects the powder being stored there. I try to keep the temperature in my reloading room constant, and strive not to let the humidity get above 51%. That may have an effect on how your dispenser throws charges.
Humidity also is the culprit as far as rust is concerned so it's best to keep it as low as possible.

In your unheated basement you could build a simple little room around your reloading set-up using plastic sheeting and you would be surprised how much heat a 100 watt bulb puts out when left on all the time. We used to use one at our hunting cabin in the crawl space to keep the pipes from freezing. I'd try to keep temperatures sort of constant, that is to say using a portable electric heater only when you go down there probably would do more harm than good.

Danny,

It is 28 outside, in my basement it is 60 with a 44% relative humidity. I just put a thermometer down there. I am going to watch it for a couple of weeks.

Thanks for the help.

Im my opinion electronics works best at a given temperature aka, warm up period) Now I don't have proof of this as for myself don't like fooling around in the cold unless it's hunting. But if a scale or a powder dispenser needs an hr to be turned on and build heat up on the circuits inside all you are doing is delaying that heatup period by storwing them snf operating them in a colder enviroment other than room temp of around 72 deg. So as mentioned my advice would be to build a small room in your basement and either get a small ceramic space heater ot get a good light bulb.
When growing up my dad had a small room just as this in our basement and stored all his powder and dies there and to my knowledge he never had any problems with rust on anything he used. Basements are pretty stable enviroment and do make for nice reloading rooms.

Danny and James,
Thanks for the ideas. I am going to let the electronic devices warm up for an hour.

Is 60 degrees too cold you think?
