Question for Silhouette Shooters

My home club is building a new 500 meter Silhouette range. I have a short action .473 bolt Rem 700 that I want to re-barrel to a 7-08.
What stock would you recommend, is there a restriction on trigger pull weight, restriction on total weight of rifle. Are all distances shot standing?
What bullet are you shooting in the 7-08 and what brand and twist of bbl works best for you.
Which loads are working best for you in the 7-08.

if you rebarrel for metallic silhouette shooting better is to go with 260 REM

better range of high BC heavy bullet, less recoil in 142 gr than in 162 or 75 grain in 7 mm, very accurate caliber and able to keep accuracy at mild velocity, 142 grain bullet is enought at 2400 fps ) to knock the ram easy

260 reM set of die are very easy to get

good shooting

Chuck,
The 7-08 is a good choice now that Sierra has a 175 gr MK in 7mm. I am a diehard 308 and the name of the game is HIGH POWER Silhouette so to all those that can't take the recoil, shoot Rimfire Silhouette. You may even be able to pick up the ones you knock over.

No trigger weight limit on standard rifle and 2 pounds on hunter rifle.

Watch your weight. Know what your weight of action and mounted scope is before ordering a stock. Your selection may be limited. I keep thinking about changing one of my H&S Silhouette Stocks to a McMillan and I would have to have them build it using their lighter weight new edge stock materials and process to make weight.

If you enjoy brass prep go with the .260 for I tried necking up .243 lapua and that was a constant donut former and had several other say they had the same problem). was told to use .308 lapua necked down but required a bit of work. ended going with with standard .260 brass with a slight trim.

If I had it to do over would have gone with the .308 for Lapua brass ready to go...besides to me the recoil difference b/t the .260 and .308 isn't all that different.

WOW, 10lbs 2oz. That isn't much weight. I have an Anschutz Silhoutte stock with a 3 way buttplate. The previous owner put lead shot in the rear end, but even with the shot poured out, the stock weighs about 4lbs. That dosn't leave much for a barreled action and a decent scope.

I was thinking of:

M70 SA
a custom Ti scope base and rings,or maybe Kelbly aluminum base and rings)
Leupold 24X BR scope or 6.5x20x40mm, either 1" models, for weight savings).
Ti trigger guard
removal of the 3 way buttplate.,as it seems to be illegal if adjusted, so why have the weight penelty?)
I figure 24" #5.5 or #6 barrel profile, heavily fluted
Anshutz trigger
308Win/7-08/243Win or the upcoming 6.5x47LM

Even then, I don't know if I could make weight. A factory Win M70 stealth weighs 10lbs, out of the box!

So,, what's a typical built highpower rifle made of to make this weight?

With any decent barrel weight you have to flute everything, use plastic trigger guard, aluminum mounts & rings and some times no butt pad. My smith built alot of silhouette guns in the 80's. He had a plastic bag in his shop that had probably 50 steel remington bolt shrouds in it.

I had a Rem 700 in a very light Kelbley BR stock, aluminum bases & rings,Nikon 6.5x20 and a 26" barrel in a heavy palma taper. It was 10.5 lbs.

Jeff,

The Ti parts are light. Plastic,, not on my rifles. I wanted to give this a shot, and see what it's all about. Figured the rifle could pull double duty, with a switch barrel 6BR for Dakota.

After thinking about it though, it hardly seems worth it.
