Question for BR competitors of .22LR with CZ 457 Rifles

I am getting some odd flyers even with my lot selected Midas+ ammo.

I clean the bore regularly.

Today I shot the first five rounds accurately.
No wind to speak of.

Then flyers repeated going high left.

I have been shooting this rifle since last November at least
1k rounds a month so now about 9k rounds through it.

It can be a very accurate. I have shot 5 round groups as small as
.13 and .17 inches.

Any ideas?

Thank you

I have CZ457 w/Bartlein for LR steel and PRS. I shoot SK Long Range that is not lot tested. It shoots great most of the time, but still have the occasional flyers here and there. Usually a ragged hole at 50, 1" at 100, and keep around 75% hits on a 20" plate at 500. I just always chalk it up to the ammo. It's not top tier, not lot tested so it just kinda is what it is. I don't shoot near as much as you. I've put maybe 3K through it in 3 years. With you shooting top tier, lot tested ammo, that doesn't leave much else. Factory barrel? Curious to see what others say.

You didn’t say which model you had. The mtr has a match chamber which keeps the bullet held tighter in the chamber so less variables. Hence more consistent ignition. But even Eley can’t make 100% perfect ammo. 1 can sneak by. Lapua also. Usually though the better brands the flyer is not so bad and stays in the 10 ring.

When I quit blaming ammo and got my act together on the bench things improved a lot
It was usually me not the ammo
Trigger pull, grip, cheek, trigger pull, and ummm trigger pull
It is the ammo but not near as often as it is the shooter in my experience
Just keep at it--get ALL of the slop and play out of your set up
Practice that trigger pull 5x more than you do now
Strive for exactly the same set up each time
Good luck--keep at it

Are you using flags and sure of their condition? High right is often a right to left breeze, it doesn’t take much for the shift.. Are your action screw torque optimized? If MTR, are stock pillars still in and are they in good condition or have they been crushed from over torquing? It is still possible to get a flyer even using Midas+ but if it’s a consistent flyer you’re probably correct in assuming it’s not ammo. All this being good, bench manners may need focus as others have said….

I noticed this too, more so with my 457 than any other rifle I own. Why this model, I don't know

If I'm even half-a-trigger-width off with my finger placement and the shot goes right/left (usually a tad up as well) I found this by sighting on a single bullet hole while pulling through the trigger tension on an empty chamber (as though to remove the bolt on the older 455/452's)

Maybe that's why so many benchrest guys do the trigger-pinch... probably worth experimenting

Wind from 3 o’clock

High left

I have shot quite a bit of Lapua Rimfire ammo. Regardless of grade, it seems to benefit from rim thickness sorting. All of the sorted batches shot better scores than the unsorted ammo. This shooting was NRA Smallbore prone and shot with a Win. 52D and a Rem. 40X.

Here is the target that made me crazy.

It is common to experience a major shift in poi vs poa when moving to a new bull. Next time when you change to another bull try sliding the rifle forwards and backwards to settle the rifle, observing through the scope until it stabilizes. Again observe through the scope after the shot, and often you can see it aligns with a flyer. This is a touchy process, and why you see many single piece rests.

I have shot X,8,X so many times with my CZ457MTR using Match Grade amo of all types. Sometimes I can account for it by wind but too often it is due to gun handling mistakes. Failure to maintain the proper cheek weld, poor trigger technique, not following through, etc. There have been a few times it was probably the round, but never more than one in a 50 shot match, if I am being honest. Cleaning up my gun handling and being uber consistent in how I break each shot helps. I do not sort my rounds but only compete with Match Grade Ammunition.

Those last two comments are probably right down my alley. I went back to the range today-almost no wind-to check everything from Action/barrel lugs, action/stock torque, Action/Rail connection, Rail/Ring connections, ring/scope tube nuts. Then recleaned the barrel and things got about 50% better. Then I tried oiling the barrel with a patch soaked in gun oil. I shot five targets with ammo ranging from Norma Tac to SK Semi Auto and finally some Midas+. The more I shot the more I started recognizing some inconsistencies in my shooting. My last five shots in the right row of the ARA unlimited target were
all inside the center circle.

I went back today and concluded it was a wind issue as well. The range had been so
great (low wind) for a the last 2 months I forgot what real world shooting is all about!

I did have a good 5 round off hand silhouette practice round hitting 3 of 5.

This was today. 5 shots at 50 yards off hand for silhouette practice. 1" orange target sticker. I am cheap so I used it on the 2nd target also. The lower one was the first target. I put the sticker on target two (upper) 180 degrees off from where it was on the lower target. I was pleased.

Another thing that may have an affect is shooting enough rounds to properly "season" the barrel before going for score? I clean my barrel after each practice session and after every match as well, but my CZ 457 VPT, in a Manners stock, shoots it's best on my 3rd card of 25 bulls. That has prompted me to shoot several foulers/sighters before a match to get the best performance from this particular rifle, earlier in the match. Might be something you want to try? Hope this helps.

Typically a right to left wind will move bullet more than a left to right. At least in my experience it does. I believe it is because the bullet is spinning the same way as the wind blowing and slowing down more causing more push.

Not sure if it effects in rimfire like they say in center fire.but they stress alot about your rifle ignition system.making sure your firing pin and all the other parts involved in the ignition are not dragging any where in your bolt .lots of vids talking about that.they say cock bolt and dry fire several times.listen to see if there is a change in the way it strucks each time.if it changes then something dragging in your ignition system.be careful though some rimfires can't be dry fired.the firing pin can struck your barrel I've been told.not saying that's your problem.just maybe something to check.
