question for 8 twist 223

shooting 300 yr paper targets..what weight bullets have
you guys found to be accurate in this twist..I am
presently using 77 gR SMK...But to try a save a few dollars
will the lighter ones work better..
I have heard of some using like 50 something or 60 something.
But never seen it done...as I mentioned mine is an 8 twist...

60 gr. Hornady V-max with v/v135 & IMR-8208 worked well for me in a 26" Benchmark 1-8" tw with Lapua Brass in the .223 A.I.

The Sierra 53 SMK works well in my 1 in 8 at 100 yards with the Sierra accuracy load of N133 so that bullet might be worth a try at 300 yards.

60 grain sierra flat back varminter.
Cheap. Jump friendly.
I tried the usual suspects in a 7 twist kreiger. All shot well at times... for a group or two. (52/53 & 69 smk produced some VERY small groups. Was not impressed with either 53 or 60 vmax. None of the Bergers were as consistent across charge weights & powders even though i really wanted to love the 70 vld.)
Every barrel is different. Gotta test.
These shot small across all load testing at 200 yards.
IMHO, while being price conscious, the choice to go heavier would depend most on your prevailing wind conditions.
If super windy, most of the above experience is N/A.

I'm a long time 223 shooter and reloader but all my previous experience has been with a 12" twist. Recently I purchased a Tikka T3X with an 8" twist. Love the rifle. I wanted to develop a load with the lighest bullet possible. I wanted to try the 53 Vmax but couldn't get any.

The 55 Nosler BT's would not group consistently. The 60 Nosler BT's shot fairly well under 1 moa. The 60 Vmax shot the most consistent. All were tested with H4895.

Just a FYI, I have a Tikka varmint 223/1:8t shot it in the local factory rifle classes. started with 69 SMK ( shot ok, not enough time spent on them) 77 Nosler Custom Comps these have shot 1.1 inch @300m behind Varget/CCI 450's, now shooting 75 Amax behind ADI 2206H/ CCI 450's, this is the combo to try if your looking for a good heavy load

A few years back there was a fella at the range shooting a 9" twist Savage Axis with 55gr V-max and Benchmark, Winchester brass and can't remember the primers.

But his average 5-shot group was less than 1/2moa at 328 yards (300 meters), and he was a newbie at reloading !

I chronoed a 10 shot string of his handloads and I remember the ES was HUGE !
Nevertheless his groups were small.

80 grain Sierra. I figure if it worked for the Army Marksman ship unit for a couple decades, it is pretty good.

The 55 Varmegeddon is my "go to" for high volume paper practice. I is cheap and shoots as well as the boutique Fowler 52s I bought some years back. I have shot some zeros in my Ackley bench gun with the Rock Creek 1-8.

+1 again on http://www.shootersproshop.com They have Nosler overruns and blems for sale in a variety of calibers, weights and designs. I can't tell they are blems, they shoot fine and I use them for practice and matches. Sometimes you need to check back and look for a specific bullet as their stock fluctuates a bit. I think you can even set up an email notice to alert you when they are back in stock. Prices will be half of what you would pay normally.
