Question.. BULK .22 bullet sorting

This may be a dumb question. But i recently bought 3000 .22 cal 55-62 fmj from American reloading. And sorting by weight and length was easy. There problem i am have is the differences in bullet profile that really cant be seen by the eye and when seating them i have to adjust the seating stem none stop to get consistent oal. I tried measuring base to Ogive when sorting the bullets and that was a mess also..

I normally just buy factory new and thought i would try the American reloading with them coming out to .5 cent a piece at the time. but now with the time i have spent messing with them. I should have just bought new

Any pointers or help would be appreciated.

Thank you and God Bless

I am afraid you are trying to make a silk purse out of a sows ear. Sometimes you get what you pay for. When you pay more, the consistency of the bullets dimensions is more closely maintained.

These are “blasting bullets”. Find the longest bullets and set the seater die so those fit in your magazine. The rest will fit then.

Thanks Guy.. I got them just to load up and have on hand for just plinking nothing else .. kids like to shoot a lot and thought i would save a few cents. lol

I see what you are dealing with, first the bullet lot was a mix of 55 and 62 gr fmj. So you sorted by weight, now you seat to the cannelure. Plinking rounds, for me. 1.mid range powder charge 2. brass sized using an ammo checker(no mortor rounds at the range). 3. Seated to start/middle of cannelure(light crimp). All of these will work for self-defense also, although I prefer soft points with cannelure for those.
