question about scope height

I see that some bench rest rifles have the scope mounted high up from the barrel.... why do some do that?
I always thought that you put the scope as close as possible to the barrel... pending the rings you can find. I have done so on hunting rifles.

Excuse me if this is a stupid question...

cuz some bench shooters want to look through the scope withOUT their face touching the stock - just the opposit from a hunting rifle.

I don't like my cheek dragging on the stock and it also helps with heat coming off the barrel in front of the scope. Matt

You got good answers.

It's also no big deal with long-range hunting rifles. That business of a "cheek weld" is a bunch of inaccurate milarky.

Yeah...

I use Crazy Glue myself ;) ;) ;)

Newbie and was wondering my scope height is at 2.5 inches. Put it there cause it just felt natural iam 6ft 2 and it just did not feel ant Uralic lose ring my head down to get cheek weld was jus wondering what scop height most guys are shooting and if there is any mathematical or physics reason to keep it low?

If you just shoot bench, it makes no difference... but if it is a field rifle, then lower is much better.

For shooting a single given distance (zero) it makes no difference. If you are shooting varying distance and dialing you will need to know your scope height to enter into what ever ballistic program you area using and you will be fine.

For what its worth I mount my scopes on field guns as low as comfortable depending on the rifle 2.0" to 2.2" on average. Small differences in sight height input are often less critical than other factors, FPS, scope tracking, altitude and environmental data. But it's all critical for dialing shots at long range

Ill take a stab at it from my point of view... in benchrest i could see more advantages to it not being real low... be able to aim without touching the rifle with your cheek, and a little secret i learn from someone was when shooting and your barrel gets hot and heat waves are coming off of it blurring your scope you can blow down the side of the barrel and give yourself a clear scope for a second or two... with the scope low your mouth wouldnt be in line with the barrel to blow down it in those cases...

with long range i mount them as low as i can on an angled scope base to allow for more vertical travel in my turrets thus allowing me to dial in to further distances before i maxed outthe verticle and have to use marks in the scope reticle...

I use a mirage shield but here is what did on scope placement...

I set mine at the height that would give me the most neutral/relaxed position when prone. If I ahave to use a muscle to look up or down, it is going to fatigue or strain and that can translate to inconsistencies in hold. I want a very relaxed, neutral hold for better consistency.
