Question about BAT Machine scope rings.

Does anyone have experience with BAT Machine scope rings? Do they need to be lapped and bedded? I’m thinking of buying a matching set for my new polished stainless BAT M action. They will be securing a Nightforce 15-55 Competition scope.

Up until now I’ve always used Spuhr monolithic mounts and never had any issues. It’s just not a great look for my current .284 F-Open build.

Thanks,

Kelvin

Understood. I would counter that the Spuhr mounts I own are pretty much perfect right out of the box. It’s just not ideal for my current application.

I’m not a fan of doing work that isn’t necessary. On this forum people have referenced other manufacturer’s scope rings such as Seekins and Burris that do not require lapping and bedding. I’m just curious if BAT Machine’s rings fall in this category.

Threads that are milled rather than tapped are the best but my point is that there's more to it than the ring being perfect. The Burris Signature rings are the only ones that will consistently need nothing. We can debate how much matters but most all can gain contact area and induce less stress by lapping and/or bedding, imo.

I had limited surface contact with a Borden action on the one set of BAT direct mount rings I owned, so some work was needed. Contact was focused along the edges with very little on the radius.

I bed every base...individual bases or one piece base/ring combos. Maximizing contact is just good practice. It's no different than bedding an action to a stock.
Al,
in his book, Tony B explains his method of bedding the mounts and rings. Do you use a similar method? If not, any tip you care to share?
Thanks

Al has posted up a number of ring bedding tutorials over the years. I’ll bet if you search this site using his user name you could find them. He’s posted the same on other forums so a general web search might dig those up too.

Mr. Boyer's book explains the process very well....most use a similar method. I don't grab pics of all of them but here's a few in process and before and after cleanup.

I always check scope rings with my lapping bar to check for good, even contact and to make sure that they are not pinching the scope where the two halfs come together. Anyway, I mounted a set of Bat picatinny rail rings 2 weeks ago and found that even though they are very well made and finished they did need lapped. YMMV

Just to follow up on my original post. I had my gunsmith check the alignment of the scope rings. He found that they required a very slight lapping. Didn’t cost much, but was happy to have the peace of mind that there was no non concentric forces applied to my scope.

Lesson learned.
