Question about Barrels

Mark M.

Silver $$ Contributor
When purchasing a barrel from a quality barrel company like lilja, Krieger, Bartlein ect, as far as accuracy is concerned, does it make any difference if it's chrome-moly or stainless steel, what is the advantage or disadvantage thank you for your time

Mark

A good barrel is a good barrel no matter what its made from.

SS barrel don't have to be blued.

Other than silver or blued there is no difference in accuracy. And of course CM will rust much easier if not taken care of.

Thanks guys I appreciate your input, I'm always learning, thanks again for taking the time

correct me if wrong.......

aren't CM barrels in the white..........then have to be blued.....?

save the trouble then...just build SS.......also........

won't SS hold up better to throat erosion than CM....

Well, you might want to put it on a rifle that was all blued and match the color. There might have been a time when stainless was believed to hold up better or last longer with a barrel burning caliber. Winchester used to sell Model 70's with a copper plated stainless barrel on the ones that were in 220 Swift caliber. The copper plating allowed the stainless barrel to be blued.
I believe in those days the difference was the steels heat treat levels. There is very little to no discernible difference in today's steel. You might get a little more life out of one manufacturers barrels that are a harder stainless.

The barrels I've always built from Pac Nor....

SS SM...for varmint rigs & Savage actions......

never got a bad one in nearly 20 yrs........

SS and CM are totally different materials. CM generally has a much higher yield strength. However, 400 series stainless is tough and strong. So there is not a lot of difference in life expectancy...YMMV.

I do have a blued SS barrel. The early SS barrels on rem 700 were "blued" via some process I have never taken the trouble to figure out. It didn't hold up as well as real bluing on CM barrels. These SS barrels were often made by Hart and were nice quality barrels. I picked up an old 700 in 7mm magnum that was made the first year. I was surprised later to find it had a stainless barrel.

Yes sir, I have used many Pac-Nor super match barrels too...all of them stainless and all of them, without exception were fantastic. I have had very good luck with their polygonal rifled barrels...but, I will say that under a borescope their idea of "polygonal" is simply a 6R barrel. Whatever it is, they shoot great. I will take a Pac-Nor barrel any day.
