Question .243 - 6mm Rem

I have been trying to decide on a cartidge and after reading
to 243 page I am considering that for long range, however would
the 6mm remington not shoot the 115 grn. dtac's a little easier
than the 243.??
I am also wondering on the best twist for 100 grn PLUS bullets.?

Thanks..............Reg

Reg,
For 105,107 and 115 's a 7.75 or 8 twist should be fine. The 6mm Remington would be a fine choice to shoot these heavy bullets. The 6mm has a little more case capacity than the .243 Winchester. The only negative that I can think of is no Laupa brass...

That is a substantial difference. Good brass can mean everything in an accurate rifle. I love the case dim's of the 6mm, but I would choose the 243 just for the brass.

If you have a hard on for the steep shoulders and longer neck, there are a TON of 243's that are just formed back with 6BR dies. Very easy to form the brass, and you "fireform" during matches. That could be another option. Howard Pitts has one called the 6PPR. Maybe he'll pop in and tell you about how he handles the brass. I've shot it. 107's have ZERO recoil out of the sling. It doesn't even take me out of the black.

Or, you could wait for thr new 6.5x47LM, and neck it fown. 90% of the 243 volume, with good looking dim's to start. A simple neck down and quick turn and you're rolling.

Before you settle on the 243 you might want to look at barrel life for this cartridge. After that, you might be looking harder at some of the otehr 6-6.5mm cartridges.

RWS also makes 6.5X57 and 7X57 brass it is not cheep but it is better than any other including Lapua you just have to find it and pay for it but if you buy 160 to 200 cases you will run a few barrels out with them.

I shoot a 6mm Rem in my LR gun and am very pleased with it's 1000 yd performance I use a 7.5 twist Krieger barrel and easily push the 115 DTAC bullets at 3100fps I use Winchester brass sorted by weight and it works just fine, BTW barrel life has exceeded 6.5 x 284 substasially as well, Gary

I'm using neck turned win brass, moly'd 115 DTAC .015 into lands, 47 gr n165, cci std primer, av. velocity 3075, sd. 7
